The contract requires Its completion within 90 days. A series of -entertainments will be held in this city next winter under the auspices of the Falls City Commercial Club. Servey, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Kate Leich, returned Monday from an extended visit with relatives In Missouri. Mrs. J. E. Wallace went to Port land Sunday to meet her mother, Mrs, Wheeler, of North Dakota, who re turned home with her for several months' visit. Special Easter services will be held In the different churches of Independ ence, and appropriate music will be provided. In the evening the members of the" Masonic lodge will attend the Presbyterian church and bear a special sermon by Rev. Dunsmore. BUELL Mr. and Mrs. Welse are visiting in Sheridan for a few days. Howard Bray and Bob Merriweather are spending a few days In Dallas. The Misses Kopan and Pollow spent Sunday with Miss Nora Jones.- The mill has shut down for a few days, as the lower mill has broken down. A large number of people attended Sunday school and '-ehurch last Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Whlttington are soonT to leave for Wyoming to spend the summer. Will Fletcher and Blanche Barber spent Sunday with A. W. Fletcher at Gooseneck. Mr. and Mrs. Dean have sold their household goods to Minor Ralney and have moved from the mill to Portland. An auction sale, Ice cream social and program were the features of enter tainment at the church last Thursday night The small boys and some of the big ones are again happy, for they can try for the speckled beauties with out fear of being caught, and several big catches have been reported. Lee Catlln's Shetland pony won a silver, cup and a red ribbon, and Ben Wind sor won second prize on grade draft horses. Mr. and Mrs. Al Patrick were called to -Newberg, Thursday, to attend the scral.of.Mr. Pr.tiick's niece, who a, rived about a week ago from Chicago. George Hall, who has been under a physician's care In Salem for several months past, returned home this week. Ralph Wells and wife, who have spent the winter months In Tillamook County, returned to their former home near Buena Vista, Friday, fully con vinced that there are worse places than old Polk and Marion Counties. The pupils of Buena Vista and Par ker schools locked horns in a debate Friday evening, taking for their sub ject, "Resolved, that Alexander the Great was a greater general than Napoleon Bonaparte." Old Oregon lans recall other Aprils when snow fell In the Willamette Valley. T. J. Goodnough,' of Salem, was in town Tuesday. Mr. Goodnough and J. W. Mclnturff have entered Into a partnership In the real estate business. Their office will be In Independence. Reverend Davis, the Baptist minis ter, Is preaching a series of sermons from Revelation. He says some people will differ from him, but he has his own opinion about these things, and Is as apt to be right as any of them, A gentleman bound for Corvallis came through Monmouth In an auto mobile one day last week. When he reached Independence and asked for directions, he was told to take each right-hand road and he would land at his destination all right. When he got to Suver, he began following the right- hand roads, and soon found himself back in Monmouth, completely lost. After finding himself In the town he started from, he employed Mr. Pyles, the hotel man, to escort him to Cor vallis. . W. Cadle, Sunday. E. L. AMANDA GROUND DIES Wife of One of Polk County's Pioneers Passes Away After Long Illnesa. Mrs. Amanda I. Ground, who died at her home near Monmouth last Satur day, after a long and painful illness, was the wife of John H. Ground, a pioneer of Polk County. She waa 54 years of age and was the eldest daugh ter of William and Mary Montgomery, " pioneers of Linn County. Mrs. Ground is survived by her hus band and five children Mrs. R. H. Rust of Portland; Mrs. F. W. Mulkey, of Falls City, and Robert F., William H.r and John M., of Monmouth, her mother living at Stayton, and the fol lowing brothers and sisters; Mrs. Allle Ward and Miss Elva Montgomery of Stayton; Mrs. R. W. Munkers, Lex ington, Oregon; Mrs. Frank Caspell, Sheridan; Mrs. Horace Trask, of Ida ho; Oscar Montgomery, Freewater, Or egon; Howard, of Sclo; Rodger, ot Mahama, and Frank, of Stayton. Mrs. Ground was burled last Sunday In the Masonic cemetery, south of Monmouth. She was a member of the Christian Church, and a woman loved by a large circle of friends. No Lack of Applicants. MONMOUTH, April 12. President J: II. Ackerman, president of the Nor mal School, has gone East to visit many normal schools and consult with the professors who have made applica tions for positions in the normal here.
