SALEM FRUIT UNION MODEL Organized Marketing or rroauns Solves Many Problems For Growers. Citizens In Vicinity of Old Fort Stand Aghast at Mention of Removal. WILL STUDY FRUIT Hortklutural Experts to Be Looted at Salem, to Aid Growers. Sheridan is on the warpath. It has suddenly awakened to the fact that it has a yearning for a blockhouse-second-hand preferred, and within easy walking distance of the center of business activity. Dayton has also manifested antagonizing symptoms of the same kind of a yearning, there- cho-Man on the warpath, and iUI O r its staid and reverend seignors have sworn by the beard of the Prophet that they would see the historic and now beloved blockhouse .nun l.fmeath the waters of the gurgling Yamhill ere they will allow ... rnin.Kd bv the unclean i,.i. of thp vandal Daytonlans. Since the announcement that Fort Sheridan had been given to Dayton k o VAdornl act engineered by Unit- a states Senator Chamberlain, citi zens of Sheridan have been vigorous in their protests against the removal of the historic structure bearing oti Phil Sheridan's name. The Sheridan Commercial Club has taken up the case with the Tillamook ,wi willamina commercial uomc-t and telegrams and letters have been ce tn Senator Chamberlain at wasi. ton nnnosine the removal of the old blockhouse. A protest signed by ih citizens of Sheridan was forward a . waaMnirton. with resolutions of protest adopted by the Commer clal Club. Sorry, Hut Helpless. Mr. Chamberlain replied that the act recommending the removal of the old fort to Dayton cannot be revolted Attorney J. T. Simpson, Sheridan'! oldest settler, appealed personally to iur Chamberlain, his boyhood chum ,1 friend. To him Mr. Chamberlal -.iwl thnt he regretted that Sherl dan's earnest appeal could not receive Vila Indorsement. ui,..rti,i,,n nririins that the old struc ture Is so ciecaycu inai i -point as far distant as Dayton will wreck It, relates a dispatch to the Or egonlan. Then, it Is contended, the old fort Is the only historical point . between here and the coast, ano oe lng situated on the main thorough fare 1t Interests travelers bent this way. The Sheridan Commercial Club was referred to the superintendent of the Slletz school by Mr. Chamberlain, who, he said, was authorized to cor respond with any Interested historical .iiv or section concerning the old fort. Superintendent Egbert, of the KileU school, solid the town of Sher idan had not been notllled that the fort bearing this city's name was open to donation. Dayton Polled. A movement is on foot in Slieridun rw.w to erect a glass frame over the l.l blockhouse. This will have to be done by popular subscription by citi zens of Sheridan, and will cost $5000. If Sheridan residents are not allowed to save the fort, many say the block house will never puss through this city In Its removal to Dayton. Many ,Wliire ouenly that they will see the old blockhouse in the Yamhill lllver before they will consent to Its remov nl to Dayton. in.r.Mtlnir new chanter In the history of the old fort Is promised, us Sheridan stands at a most strategic point on the road between Oram! Hondo and Dayton, and the old fort will have to puss through this city. Sherldun can't see how Dayton can i-lulni the historic fort Justly, even though the recent Federal donutlon gives it to Dayton. "Kort Sheridan for Sheridan" Is the rry hero, and Tillamook and Wllla inina stand with Sheridan In the light to keep the fort here. No Stoiw I'W Roose'vt'lt. Application for brief rear platform talks have been received from many enterprising places, but nil have been dented by the passen ger department, because granting one request would Involve the rallroaod in no end of illllleulty.
