i- 1 ! I BLOCKHOUSE'S HISTORY FAMOUS STRUCTURE BUILT BY SHERIDAN IN 1857. Firs Station of Any Great Prominence In Oregon Interesting Cliarac. ters There. NEWS OF PEOPLE YOU KNOW Comings and Goings as Told by Our Exchanges. . Al Whitney and -family visited in Dallas over Sunday. Monmouth Her ald. The citizens of Dayton are steppin high thesedays, for they have the promise of United States Senator George Chamberlain and of the Indian and war authorities that the old Fort Yamhill blockhouse, which was built by General Phil Sheridan when he was a lieutenant, and is now on the Grand Ronde Indian reservation, will be moved to their city, comments the Portland Journal. Sheridan, Butler, Wlilamina and Grand Ronde citizens all wanted the historic blockhouse, but Dayton got in ahead. Senator Cham beriain, in a letter to J. T. Simpson of Sheridan, tells of the disposal of the blockhouse question. George H. Himes, of the Oregon His torical Society, took up the question of - moving the blockhouse from its pres ent site about ten years ago. It now stands about a half mile from its orig inal site. ' Mr. Himes. took up the mat ter with Dr. Andrew Kershaw, then Indian agent at Grand Ronde. Dr. Kershaw suggested that the Historical Society take charge of the blockhouse, which was then used as a guardhouse, but Mr. Himes- informed him that the organization had no funds. Mr. Himes thought, because of its historical asso ciations, that the blockhouse should not be moved from Yamhill County. Built in 1857. Efforts were then made by Mr. Himes and others to interest citizens of McMinnville, Sheridan, Dayton and other places. He suggested that one of these communities move the block house to Its city, build a new roof over lt place It on a concrete foundation and then build a shelter or house over it. The proposition has dragged on for 10 years. Fort Yamhill, commonly known as Fort Sheridan, wastiullt under the di rection of Lieutenant Phil Sheridan in 18G7. Captain David Russell was In charge of the companny and as an Illustration of the strangeness of fate, this same officer, while serving as a brigadier general under Sheridan in the Atlanta campaign, was killed. Sheridan, at th time he built the blockhouse, was a second lieutenant. An officer of the name of Gardner was first lieutenant. ! The blockhouse was built Just as the Indian wars were closing. It Is a small structure, about 24 feet square, and was originally erected upon an emln ence commanding the main road Into the Grand Ronde reservation. It Is built of hewn timbers, coupled togeth er with pegs, and the second story pro jects on two sides, thus permitting the defenders to shoot at any angle. Wanted Couiis-oinIhc. John E. Miller was the first Indian agent at the Grand Ronde agency. He was succeeded by lienjamln Simpson, father of the poet, Samuel L. Simpson, said to have been Sheridan's most Inti mate menu during the early days. It was with Simpson that Sheridan had the famous argument over the pros pects of the forthcoming war with the South. Sheridan at that time argued that the proper thing to do was to compromise with the Southern states. With Simpson, Sheridan left the business of attending to all of his pri vate affairs when he went Into the Civil war. lie addressed the Indian agent as "Simps." A One white elm shade tree which the writer frequently passes has come to grief owing to the fact that years ago, when- the head of the tree was forming, cure was not taken to pre vent large limbs growing up unci out from the same point In the trunk. In the case in question three were ill lowed to do so. A couple of years ngo one of the three large branches was blown from the top In a heavy wind, and a short lime since a big split np- pciinu between the two remaining sections of the top. One of these is sure to come down soou, leaving but a skeleton of what gave proinl.-e of being a shade tree of remarkable beauty and symmetry. The trouble might have been prevented when the tree was first set by so pruning it as to give n sturdy and well Jointed frame. The same principle holds In the case of fruit trees, and poor heads having weal; Joints should be remedied while the tree Is young.
