The annual Cherry Fair opened in Salem yesterday with a large attend ance and a splendid exhibit. Many people went over from Dallas during the day, and all returned with glowing reports of the big; show. The railroad is giving excellent train service and low fares, and It Is expected that large crowds of Polk County people will at tend today and tomorrow. When Dallas re-surveyed its street lines' a few years ago in preparation for extensive macadam improvement, wide park Btrips were laid out be tween the lot lines and the street curb ing. These strips range from three to six feet In width, and In some parts of the' town they are eight or ten feet wide. A majority of the proper ty owners have kept these park strips in a fairly neat condition, but on some of the streets they are positively a dis. grace to our boasted civilization. A neat lawn is attractive to the eye, and so is a well-improved street; but a strip of dog fennel waist high between the two spoils the looks of both. Dal las is too large a town to permit this unsightly condition to prevail, and it Is to be hoped that the council will take prompt action to remedy It. Dal las cannot afford to present the ap pearance of a weed-grown village. We passed that stage of our existence sev eral years ago. Was Born In Polk. At the family home on Center atreet, Salem, Oregon, Thursday, June 30, 1910, Elijah E. Bailey, aged 33 years, died of tuberculosis. The deceas ed is survived by his aged parents and a brother. He was a practicing dentist In this city until declining health forced him to retire from active prac tice. He was born In Polk county, and was burled in the little cemetery at Bethel Saturday. Statesman. Assessor C. S. Graves and family spent Sunday on the farm near Ball- ston and celebrated in Sheridan, Mon day. Mrs. Graves and the children will spend the Summer on the farm. Mr. Graves returned to Dallas, Wednes day, y COUNTY, COURT MEETS Many Road Matters Being Considered at Regular July Term. . The greater part of , the . County Commissioners' court for the July term up to late yesterday afternoon had been given to the consideration of road matters. Judge Coad and Com mtssloners Rlddell and Teal are In at tendance and are now giving their at tentlon to the claims against the county. Yesterday's proceedings were as follows: County Treasurer E. C. Dunn was credited with cancelled warrants to the amount of $46,180.85. In the matter of vacating certain parts of the public highway through the Holmes Gap In consideration of $350," paid by the Southern Pacific Company, the county vacates all that part of the county road lying West of a line parallel with and 30 feet dis tant East from the center of said rail' road In Section 32, township 6 south range 4 west. Ordered that deed for right-of-way executed by George W. Dow to Polk County be accepted and placed on record In the County Clerk's offlce. The petition of Thomas Holman and others for the vacation of certain streets In Eola was granted. In the matter of the petition of J. C, Kramer and others for the establish ment of a county road to be known as the J. C. Kramer road ordered that the County Surveyor, S. H. Petre and R. R. Riggs meet July 20, at 9 a. m. to view such proposed road; bond re quired In sum of $100. In the matter of the petition of T, B. Masters and others for a county road to be known as the Black Rock road report of viewers read first time, Ordered that money be transferred from the General "Road Fund to road districts as follows: To District No. 12 $380.60; to DlBtrlct No. 22, $556.76; to District No. 4, $100. SPECIAL LATE TRAIN Visitors to Salem Cherry Fair Can Return Home Saturday Night. In response to a general demand for late train out of Salem tomorrow (Saturday) night, the management of the Salem, Dallas & Falls City rail road has generously consented to grant the desired service. This train will ae- commodate the large crowd from Dal las and Falls City that will wish to remain for the evening festivities. The special will leave West Salem at 10:30 p. m., and Will arrive in Dallas at 11:06 p. m., and at Falls City at 11:30 p. m. Excellent train service will be pro vided by the local railroad for all three days of the Cherry Fair and this will Insure a large attendance, for the people of Polk County have learned that no transportation company in Oregon Is more willing to provide for the convenience and comfort of Its patrons than Is the one whose road begins at Black Rock and ends at West Salem. Chapman, of Salem, have re turned home from Ohio, where they went a few weeks ago to visit rela tives and superintend the erection of a monument at the grave of their late father, Charles H. Chapman. In In the hurried preparation of copy for Tuesday's Observer, mention of Miss Pollock's splendid recital at the Methodist Church last Friday night was inadvertently overlooked. Miss Pollock, whd was formerly a resident of this city, was, given a warm welcome on her return and was greeted by an audience that comfort ably filled the main auditorium of the church. Her program ranged from grave to gay and gave her an excellent opportunity to display her versatility. The young woman's friends had heard nattering reports of her progress in her profession since leaving Dallas few years ago and they were not dis appointed. Her readings Friday night all evinced the artistic touches, certain grasp, and the self confld were unable to be present missed rare treat.
