The local wool dealers are not tak ing hold freely of the Western Oregon Product now, as they find It almost mposslble to Interest the eastern trade In-Valley grades, says the Ore gonian. The largest deal that has Rune mrough recently was reported In the local market yesterday, the i.unnier or the pool at Scio to the Sa em miiig. There were 4000 fleeci)( or u..oui 30,000 pounds In the pool, and price paid was said bv local dent 10 oe 0 cents. The Scio wools are among the best produced in the Willamette Valley. The Pnni.nH iraue has been making offers of 18 cents for fine and 16 cents for coarse Valley grades. In Eastern Oregon the disposition of the growers is still to hold back, because of the low prices bid at the various sales, and it is now certain that a large portion of the clip will be shipped East on consignment. New wools are reaching Boston on consign ment also from Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico. Throughout the Western states, as In Oregon, the Eastern mill men have operated more freely than the Eastern merchants. In Montana, where shearing Is now under way, the disposition of the flock masters is to hold their wools until they get their own prices, or consign the clips East. ' , While no contract has been entered Into for the building of the new High School, the V board has reached agreement with Contractor Oscar Holmes whereby the work Is to be done for $29,400. , The board does not deem it advis able to enter Into a contract before the bonds are accepted by the buyers and the money Is actually paid into the district treasury. A favorable re port on the validity of the bonds Is expected daily, and, Immediately upon Its receipt, it Is altogether likely that the bid of Mr. Holmes will be accepted Mr. Holmes' first bid was 135,950 This was the lowest bid submitted for the construction of the building ac cording to the Morrison plans. As the board had only $37,000 on hand after paying for the lot, and as something like $4500 for heating and plumbing would have to be added to Mr. Holmes' bid, the board found that it would not be able to keep the cost of the build ing and grounds within the $40,000 limit, and all bids- were rejected. Offers Amended Bid. Finding itself facing the alter native ot altering the plans and spec ifications or of abandoning the im provement altogether, the board im mediately decided to ascertain what could be done with the money at its disposal. ' After going into the matter very thoroughly with Mr. Holmes, It was found that by leaving the base ment and second story of the build ing partially unfinished, the work could be done for $29,400. The board thereupon agreed with Mr. Holmes to award him the contract at that figure immediately upon the acceptance of the bonds by the buyers. Under the provisions of the revised bid, the outside walls and roof of the building are to be finished according to the original plans. The first story is to be completed ready for use, and the basement Is to be partially finished. The halls, toilet rooms and engine room in the basement are to be pro vided with concrete floors, but no con crete Is to be used in the floor of the gymnasium. No work will be done on the inter ior of the school rooms on the second floor this year. Neither will the aud itorium be available for use. The only work that will be done on the second floor will be the finishing of the haUs and corridors and the hanging of the doors of the various rooms. Neither will it be possible to place an asbestos roof on the building, as called for in the plans, unless as much as $400 shall be added to the contract price. In case this amount is not ad ded, an iron roof will be put on. It will be noted that only one story of the building is to be completely finished this year, and that only such rooms as are actually needed will be fitted up In the basement. The direct ors say that the building, even In Its partially finished condition, will be sufficient for all purposes during the coming school year. Therefore, rath er than to abandon the work altogeth er, they deem it best to build with the money at their disposal, leaving the unfinished rooms to be fitted up as needed In the years to come.
