MILKING MACHINE TESTS.
f xperimenta of Tennessee Station With
the Mechanical Milker.
One after another the experiment
stations are taking up the question of
milking by machine, with results not
altogether In agreement, although gen
erally favorable. The conclusions
drawn by the Tennessee experiment
station are grouped tinder nine beads
as follows:
First Under conditions existing
during the test at the station machine
milking has been at least equal if not
slightly superior to band milking.
Second. Under average conditions a
cow Is milked as clean with the ma
chine as by band. An expert operator
can milk cleaner with tha machine
than the average man will by band,
Third. If the teat cups and mouth
pieces are properly adjusted the ma
chine is not injurious to the teaU and
udder or objectionable to the cows,
some even preferring it.
Fourth. The machines are not diffl
cult to keep clean, and a high grade of
milk is secured when machines are
used. If neglected, however, they
soon become filthy and are -a serious
source of contamination.

milkers. There is a great difference
between the number of cows different
men will milk per hour. To secure
thorough milking and rapid work the
operator should follow the machines
closely to see that each cow Is milking
properly.

being sure that each teat is milking
before going to the next cow and
thorough manipulation of the udder

complain thnt wrong methods are too
often followed. Through effort made

binder twine In tying fleeces this prac
tice has been largely discontinued.
But dealers conipluin that too much of
the wool last year was tied with
tilck twine made of old bagging,
which Is almost as bnd ns sisal, as it
rubs off on the wool and will not take
the dye In manufacture. What Is
wanted is a hard, smooth twine, keep
ing all tags or foreign matter out of
the fleeces.

stages of lactation than when the cow
is fresh.
Seventh. The operator should be
above the average farm laborer in in
telligence and mechanical skill.
Eighth. Troubles that occur in op
erating are due more to misuse than to
any fault of the machine.
Ninth. Some cows give more milk
by machine milking and others less.
Present knowledge Indicates that ma
chine milking Is as efficient as band
milking under average conditions. A
great deal better yields by machine
could be secured If the herd were se
lected for uniform teats of good size.
Not More Than Ten Per Acre.
The number of lambs to turn Into a
cornfield per acre depends upon the
feed in It Ordinarily ten lambs will
not be too many to eat the pasturage
furnished by one acre. Where corn is
ripe and the yield is fifty bushels per
acre thirty-five or forty lambs are fre
quently turned in xr acre, but this Is
a different proposition. Here only the
pasturage and not the entire crop is
desired. Lambs are sometimes in
clined to trample down the corn In the
corner where they are turned In. To
avoid their doing this (hey should be
permitted to work Into the cornfield
slowly and at their own pleasure. If
driven hurriedly into a field they lose
each other and Immediately run as if
wild In an effort to find one another.

Feeding Orphan Lamba.
It may be more trouble at first, but
it I better to teach baby orphan
lambs to drink out of a busln than
from a Bottle, as It will be less trouble
as they grow older. The milk should
be blood warm and fresh from the
cow for the first few days. If any is
spilled on their wool It should be
wiped off, as the odor of stale ndlk la
unwholesome and disagreeable.
Exercise For Breeding Ewes.
An old sheep breeder and a success
ful one says that exercise for the
breeding ewe is most essential. No
