Id the recently published "dairy number" of the Pacific Homestead, which gives a general outline of the progress of that industry in Oiegon, Ot. Q. Hewitt, proprietor of Mistletoe Stock Farm, near Monmouth, Oregon, says regarding his herd of dairy cattle : "We have at the head of our herd the young bull, Mistletoe Pogis No. 75,371, and he is just as good individ ually as he is la breeding, and that is saying a great deal. He carries through his sire, Gertie's Stoke Pogis No. 66,492 (sixth In register of merit), 25 per cent of the blood of Stoke Pogis of Prospect (GO in the list), 12J per cent of Stoke Pogis 5th (25 in the list), 25 per cent the blood of Gertie of Glynllyn No. 74,475, 21 lbs. 2 ozs. in seven days, 16,780 lbs. 3 ozs. milk in 3G5 days, average test, 4,728 per cent. R.R.Hill, Dallas. 4-13-tf that have occurred in the logging anv herd in the state. camps near Falls City, Mill Creek and other places in western Polk Couuty of late, give ample testimony to the wisdom of the movement to establish a hospital In this city. Situated as it is, Dallas is in prompt and direct communication with nearly all of those places where accidents resulting in serious and fatal injury to the laborers in the camps and mills, are most likely to occur. A hospital located here will afford to the unfortunate victims of the accidents (which are usually unavoidable) that occur with such frequency, prompt nnd adequate care. The result will be less fatality resulting from mill and camp accidents nnd less danger of injured men becoming permanently maimed or disabled. This phase alone, aside from the numerous otherfeatures that may be suggested, stamps the enterprise as a worthy one and bespeaks for it the support of all the citizeus, not of Dallas alone, but of the entire western half of Polk county. Accidents in Logging Camps. Tom Thrasher, a laborer in the log ging camps above Black Rock, was caught under a rolling log yesterday and the bone in his right leg broken. The fracture Is not complicated and a rapid recovery is expected. Dr. A. B. Starbuck who attended him returned from Black Rock this morning. He reports that Al Layton, who was in jured last, week, is doing as well as could be expected considering the extent of his hurts. Mr. Layton was caught in one of the lines from the donkey engine and thrown to and fro, with great violence, his body being severely bruised in a num ber of places and one of his ribs shattered. A number of accidents of a less serious nature have also occurred in the camps within the past few days. COURT HOUSE NOTES Items of Interest From the Records in the Caunty Offices Briefly Told. Harmon, manager of the local baseball team, went to McMinn ville, this afternoon, where his ser vices have been secured in the build ing of a baseball park for that city. The park will be completed about May 1 and McMinoville will enter actively into the season s playing. The prune trees in the orchards about Dallas began blooming last week and by Sunday the trees were fairly white with their burdens of blossoms, Indications thus far are favorable for a successful season in that branch of the fruit farming of the county.
