Major Frank Baker, of tbe Third Infantry, Oregon National Guard, was up from Portland last week and put Dr. L. A. Bollman, Conrad Staf- rin and Verne Compton through the examinations forcaptain, first lieuten ant and second lieutenant, respec tively, of Company H. Major Baker visited the rifle range near Ellensdale during his stay in this city and was highly pleased with it giving hi9 opinion that It was one of the best in the 8 ta tern many respects. There is however, danger that the guardmen may have to abandon their fine range as their lease on the land has expired and there is some objection to their renewing it. Not wishing to lose all of tbe labor that they have expended putting it into condition for rifle prae tice, the members of the company will make every effort to retain it if pos si ble, since a change at this time would seriously hamper their work of preparation for the militia encamp ment next summer. The newly constructed sewer syS' tern, the mains of which run through the full lengths of three of the more important streets of Dallas and which taps practically the entire residence district of the city, has been formally accepted by the city council. This new sewer, with the two mains on Court and Mill streets, gives Dallas a sys tem of sewer drainage the equal of which is not to be found In any other city of equal size in Oregon or per haps in the whole of the Coast states. Tbe amount of fruit and nut trees, which is being set out on the ranches and farms of this vicinity, is Increas ing wonderfully with each passing season. It will be a question of but a fewyeais, until Dallas is supplying an enormous demand for those com modities in both tbe local and tbe export trade and then the far sighted persons who are now preparing for that time by planting .orchards, will find that every tree that they have set out is "just as good as so much money in the bank." Will Discuss Important Step. Federation and final organic union will be considered at the sessions of the Oregon Conference of the United Evangelical denomination, which meets in St John's Evangelical Church next Thursday night. Measures look ing to organic union projected by the Evangelical-United Brethren Minis terial Association will come up for review. The Ministerial Association indorsed Dallas College, the United Evangelical school, with the condition that the Evangelical Association should be represented on the board of regents. Fraternal delegates will attend the conference from the Evan gelical Association and United Brethren conferences. The proposed union, If effected, will mean much for Dallas College, and indirectly for Dallas, since it will almost double the backing of the institntion both finan cially and in the sources from which it will be enabled to reenforce the ranks of its student body. It is the view taken by students, who, after they are well along toward the acluevementof their aim the acquire ment of an education which will fit them for effective work as a teacher suddenly find the means by which they hoped to acquire that education threatened witli dissolution and their two or three years' work on the verge or suddenly coming to naught. Small wonder that young people who And themselves facing a crisis of this nature, rally witli one accord to the support of the institution on the exist ence or which depends their ability to completo the work that they have mapped out for themselves. Four New Candidates. Four new names have been added to the city ticket for the approaching election. F. J. Coad filed his petition for councilman from the second ward Friday; H. C. Eakin filed his petition as a candidate for mayor, and W. A. Ayres, for councilman in tho third ward, yesterday, and Robert Howe presented himself for councilmau from the second ward today. Tho complete ticket up to date is as follows : A. B. Muir and H. C. Eakin for mayor; E. N. Hall for councilman-at-large; Conrad Stafrin for councilman from first ward; F. J. Coad and Robert Howe, for couuciltnen from second ward; W. A. Ayres, Moses Manston and A. J. Martin forcouneil- raen from third ward; H. B. Cosper and Charles Gregory for auditor and police judge. Term at Bueil Closes. The public school at Buell closed Thursday after a successful term. Mr. and Airs. Wallace Kellogg, who had been teaching during the year were given a pleasant farewell recep tion at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Rowell, about fifty guests being present. Mr. Kellogg was in Dallas, Saturday, enroute for Clackamas county, where he has secured another position, ne win oe employed again next year in the Buell school. Wanted. Three hop contracts have been tiled with County Clerk E. M. Smith dur ing the past week as follows : T. Rosen wald & Company, a three years' con tract with C. H. Mitoma for 10,000 pounds at 11 cents; and a three years' contract with W. P. and M. S. Bevens for 10,000 pounds at II cents; J. W. Seavy & Company, a contract with Peter Schultz for 30,000 pounds of 1909 hops at 10 cents. Eleven cents Is the highest price for which hops have been contracted since January 1, and that price has been conceded only on three year contracts. Tho prices offered on one and two year contracts range from 9 to l" cents a pound. Utopians Install Officers.
