The way to build up Dallas is to pat
ronize Dallas people.
In the establishment of a free
library and reading room this week,
Independence founded an institution
whose value to her citizenship will be
well nigh inestimable.
H. O. Campbell, secretary of the
Dallas Development League has in
his hands hundreds of letters from
prospective immigrants from the East
Every citizen can materially help in
the campaign for a bigger Dallas, by
lending his assistance to the secretary
of the Development League in sending
literature and information to the East,
concerning the resources and pros
pects of this city and its vicinity.
Governor Benson made no mistake
in calling the special session of the
legislature. Adhering strictly to the
pledge they had given him before he
would consent to call the session, the
legislators assembled, transacted the
business which they had been called
to transact nothing more and ad
journed. The State of Oregon has
been bettered by their having held
that supplemental session and the leg
islature has in a measure atoned for
sins of omission and commission iu
the regular session.

The effort to bring back the normal
school question into the special session
of the legislature this week was unsuc
cessful and properly so. It was
understood before the session was
called that that question could not
be brought up. Circumstances are
gradually bringing the problem to a
natural solution and if allowed to
carry out their perfect work, will have
It practically settled within two years.
Oregon should have at least two
normal schools, but in the new order
of things it is too early to hope for
that. The ultimate outcome of the

be hoped, in which the normal schools
