Polk County Observer ALLGOOD & COLLINS LESSEES Published Semi-Weekly at II. SO per Yew. . Strictly in Advance. NEW LEAFLETS RECEIVED Development League Has More Liter ature For Use In Campaign To Boost Dallas. Entered aa second-class matter March 1, 1907, at the post oltice at Dallas, Oregon, under the Act of Congress 01 March 3, 1879. DALLAS, OREGON, March 12, 1909 The way to build up Dallas ts to pat ronize Dallas people. Let your Eastern friends know more about Dallas by accompanying each letter you write them with some of the Development League's literature. In the Carmack murder trial the overworked unwritten law has been extended by Cooper's attorney to pro tect men who murder to avenge insults against their "honah." This may seem to the cooler headed of our citi zens a trifle of a stretch, but then the unwritten law, like the dementia plea, has always been elastic Preparations are being made for bringing an enormous pressure to bear at the coming special session of the legislature, to bring about an appropriation for the three state nor mal schools. Such action, while no doubt prompted by motives entirely right, is la advised. The coming sea sion of the legislature was called for the purpose solely of correcting old errors and any effort to bring up new questions of legislations or in fact any legislation foreign to the purpose ror which the session has been called, will be promptly (and rightly) sup. pressed. Again, the normal schools like the poor, we have had "always with us" (how unfortunately exact the analogy) and they have never been ratod, by the people as a whole, at any thing like their roal value. To allow them for a time to drop out of the niche in oureducational temple, which they have filled so long, unostentati ously and pitifully unappreciated, may have a really beneficial effect in awakening the people to their real importance In the state. The cure is a trillo harsh perhaps, but if it will bring about a complete regeneration, h win prove ultimately to have been superior to the policy of eking out a scant and begrudged existence nothing more as the school's have been obliged to do In the past. The colonist rate leaflets printed by the Sunset Company for the use of the Dallas Development League in advertising and boosting campaign have been received by Hon. U. Loughary, president of the League, and a number of them distributed among the business men and citizen of Dallas. xne leaflet has on its title page "Colonist Kates to Dallas, Oregon daily during March and April, 1909, The two following pages contain list of the rates to Dallas, from all of the principal points In the United States and Canada. Then comes f three page descriptive sketch concern ing Dallas and vicinity and the various industries and resources of this section. The remainder of the booklet is devoted to general informa tion as to time of trains leaviDg, sources from which further informa tion may be secured, etc., the last two pages containing a map giving the exact location of Dallas and the most direct routes by rail thither. The leaflet is of a convenient size to fit an ordinary envelope and the plan is to have copies of it distributed among the people of Dallas so that every letter mailed from this city to the East in future, may cod tain one. The descriptive "write up" is very good, much better in fact than In the first pamphlet issued, and should have a marked effect in attracting the attention of prospective imroi grants from the East to Dalln-;.' The first pamphlet or "How To Get To Dallas, Orer-on, : although in some respects not entirely satisfactory, re sulted in a flood of inquiries from If You Eaad This It will be tn lunrn that the leading medl' cal writers end teachers of all the several schools of practice recommend, in the strongost terms possible, each and every Ingredient tillering into the composition of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery for the cure of w eak stomach, dyspepsia, catarrh of stomach, "liver complaint," torpid liver, or biliousness, chronic bowel affoctions, and all catarrhal diseases of whatever ration, name or nature. Another proof of their influence is given by the advance man of the Ore gons, w. E. Critchlow. He says that in the cities where he attended games, tue pampniets distributed were eagerly snapped up by the spectators and after the supply had been exhausted the members of the Ore- gons' party would be eagerly pressed by a throng of interested persons, asking for more literature and further nformation.
