FRIITMEN FEAR PEST Brown Tail Moth Said To Have Been Found In Imported Trees From France. DALLAS, OREGON, FEBRUARY 26, 1909 The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. Tbe average price paid for butter Tat at the Corvallis creamery for the past year was 32 cents per pound. The sveraee price at Elgin, Illinois, the great headquarters of the middlewest dairy industry, is 23 to 24 cents. The Oregon dairyman has an advantage of 8 to 9 cents a pound in the price. and the further advantage of an infln itely better climate. In spite of these vital advantages, however, Oregon Imported last year $200,000 worth of dairy products, mostly from Minne sota. Portland Journal. BIENNMAl AFTERMATH. BY DEAN COLLINS. It is probable that tbe care and skill of E. C. Armstrong, fruit inspector, will result in preventing one of the worst peBts known to horticulturists, gettinga start In the Willamette valley. Recently H. M. Williamson, president of the state board of horticulture, has been warning fruit men all over the state to beware of the Brown Tail moth in nursery stock imported from France. It seems that this deadly little pest has attacked French nursery stock this year with unusual vigor and that sixty per cent of the French stock brought into this country is infected. Yesterday while examining some seedlings imported by C. E. Lansing, Mr. Armstrong found several stocks that bore apparently plain evidences; of being infected with this insect Tbe seedlings were shipped from France toSaleiuandhad not been opened until Mr. Armstrong began bis examina tion. Tbe state law requires that rail road companies shall not deliver any nursery stock imported from outside the state without having first notified a fruit inspector. The Brown Tail moth and other pests of a similar nature secured a foothold in Massachusetts several years ago and since that time hun dreds of dollars havebeen expended in that state to try to get rid of the pests, which have taken not only fruit trees, but ornamental and shade trees and other vegetation. Mr. Armstrong has communicated with Mr. Williamson and tho special ists at tbe O. A. C, to make sure that he has found tho real Brown Tail moth, of which, however, there does not seem to be much doubt. Slot kw til's furniture Store, Dallas RIPE OLIVES The Threshermen Will Meet. state officers of the Oregon Threshers' Association will be in Dal las, Saturday, to meet the farmers and threshermen of this vicinity for the purpose of perfecting a local organi zation. The aim of the movement is to promote the building of better roads and bridges, and securing other things which will be of benefit not only to members of the association, but to the tax payers of the county at large. The threshing interests in Polk county are quite strong and the threshing acreage is largo, and it is anticipated that these two elements will combine to build up a stroug organization here. At tomorrow's meeting plans will also be made for sending a delegation to the State Con vention in Portland in May. MONMOUTH. U.
