V. Scott, of Palls City, was a visitor in Dallas, Wednesday. Henry Myers, of Soio, la visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Grant. Samuel Orr, or fliekreall, was a business visitor in Dallas yesterday. The Oak Grove grange will hold a public installation of officers, Satur day. The Eev. H. H. Parnham went to Portland, Wednesday, for a short visit. Hon. D. L. Keyt, of Perrydale, was in Dallas, Wednesday, on a business visit. M. I. Capps was over from Salem, Wednesday, on a business visit in Dallas. Miss Laverne Burns, of Bridgeport, was in Dallas yesterday enroute for Portland. Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Campbell were visitors in Independence and Salem, Wednesday. Miss Eachel Cook is visiting at the home of her nephew, M. I. Capps, near Salem. Commissioner William Rlddell, of Monmouth, was a business visitor in Dallas, Wednesday Mr. and Mrs. J. G. VanOrsdel went to Portland, Tuesday, to attend the production of "Ben Hur". J. H. Moore, of Mill City, went to Portland yesterday morning after a few days' visit In this city. County Clerk E. M. Smith issued license to wed to Richard Clan field and Elizabeth Ross, Wednesday. Miss Ella Roy went to Portland yesterday for an indefinite stay. She intends taking lessons in vocal music. B. M. Guy returned Wednesday from Portland, where he had been attending the Hardware Dealer's Con vention. County School Superintendent H. C. Seymour, accompanied by Mrs. Sey mour, went to Falls City yesterday on a visit. A meeting of Jennings Lodge, Num ber 9, A. F. & A. M., is announced for Friday night. Work will be put on in the M. M. degree. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Craven returned Wednesday, from Portland, where he had been attending the Hardware Dealers' Convention. Mrs. Ellen J. Hubbard returned Tuesday night from a short visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hub bard in McMlnnville. At the Presbyterian church next Sunday, the pastor will speak at 11 a. m. on "What To Do With Care" and at 7:30 p. m. "The Rubrio of Redemption." A cordial welcome to all. Casey and daughter, Helen, returned Wednesday evening from a few weeks' visit with relatives in Roseburg and Woodburn. Trains to Falls City this week have been crowded with loggers and saw mill men returning to the mills and camps in and about that city. Roy Wassam, the Dallas repre sentative of the Spauldlng Logging Company, went to Salem yesterday morning on a business visit. Representative C. L. Hawley, of Polk county, has introduced a bill in the House for a uniform term of six months school in all rural disiricts. Mrs. Chester Hare, of Portland, and Mrs. Laura Miller, of Newberg, attended the funeral services of the late Monroe Miller in Dallas, Tuesday. County Commissioner J. B. Teal was unable to be down from Falls City, Wednesday and yesterday and no adjourned session of the County Court was held. Rural telephone service has been seriously interfered with during the past few days by the storm and a few of the city lines have also been slightly damaged. The Dallas High School has dropped out of the Polk County Debating League and In order to fill all dates scheduled In the organization, the Monmouth school will put two teams in the field. At the Christian church next Sun day the themes of discourses will be : "If All The Members Were Just Like Me, What Kind of a Church Would This Church Be?" and "The Drama of Human Life." With the exception of a few of the schools in the rural districts, work in the public schools of Polk county has been fully resumed after vacations of from one week to ten days during the unpleasant weather. The Student Prohibition Association of Dallas College is holding weekly meetings tor study and is preparing for the work in the oratorical contests. The local contest will be held here In February and the State contest In Salem early in April. The three and one-half Inch water main across the LaCreole, which supplies North Dallas, was broken and torn out by the flood and for sev eral hours that portion of the city was literally "dry." A temporary main has been run from the corner near the Stouffer residence and carried across the stream on the bridge to serve temporarily. County Clerk E. M. Smith and Deputy Clerk A. F. Toner have been hard at work for several days on a transcript of the evidence In the recent Hembree murder trial, which will be submitted at the hearing in the Supreme Court. The "brief" as it is jocularly referred to is anything but brief, containing nearly 300 pages or type written matter, embodying the whole of the evidence brought out In Hembree's last trial. Myer, a prominent hop man of Polk county aud owner of 100 acres of fine hop lands, recom mends that the growers of the Wil lamette valley use some concerted action and plow up a portion of their fields. "1 know of several yards that are being plowed up" said Mr. Myers, "and I myself have plowed up 15 acres of hop" lands. I do not believe it would profit a farmer to quit the hop business entirely. I think that would be a mistake, but if every hop man in the county would cut down a little on the size of his crop the market next year would show more than enough difference to yield a monster revenue. 'I think in Polk county there are altogether 150 acres which have been plowed up and there will probably be more. There certainly should be a big amount of work in both counties for the personal benefit of the hop growers. Elbert, a traveling repre sentative of the Evening Telegram, was In Dallas yesterday working on the Telegram's contest for a trip to Alaska, which is to be conducted on the same plan as other contests held by the Telegram in previous years. J. E.Foster, the new proprietor of the Caldwell pool room, moved the tables and equipments Tuesday into the room formerly occupied by J. C. Shultz In the Uglow building, and has fitted up one of the neatest and most attractive amusement halls in the city. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ackerraan has announced that his office would offer a prize of to the high school student submitting the best drawing to be used as a cover page design for "Arbor day," the annual publication devoted to the observation of Arbor day. The Buffalo Germans can still lay claim to the basketball championship of the world, although they had to struggle desperately to retain their laurels In the game with The Oregons, Wednesday night. The score, as tele graphed to Dallas yesterday morning, stood 23 to 20, leaving the Germans, by the scant margin of only three points, the possessors of the title they have held for years. Few teams entour have ever before had the temerity to match themselves against the redoubtable Germans and the Dallas five has certainly done amazingly well, considering all cir cumstances far better in fact than any of the teams that have preceded it and a defeat of that sort is one over which neither the players nor their supporters should feel dismayed. From Buffalo, the Oregons will swing back unto the second half of their tour, playing In Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and the states of the Middle West. Oregon Building First Finished. Oregon was the first state to com plete its building and the first to Install exhibits at the Alaska-Yukon-Paciflo exposition. Five months in advance of the opening of the exposi tion Oregon had two cars of choice apples and a car of forest products stored In its building and the entire exhibit will be installed two months before the gates of the exposition are opened. The Oregon building Is a handsome structure and occupies one of the best locations on the exposition grounds. It is just off the central court and overlooks Lake Wash ington. The building was completed In November and since that time the Oregon commission has been engaged in the assembling of the state exhibit. By the early completion of its build ing Oregon has received a large share of the advertising during the pre-ex-position period. In the past three months more than 60,000 persons have paid admission to the exposition grounds. G. W. Cone returned Wednesday from a few days' business visit in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. D. I. Caldwell went to Stayton today for a short visit with relatives. Mrs. Frank Rowland, of Portland, is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Shriver. Homer Shope, a former resident of Dallas, but now of Winslow, Arizona, is visiting in this city. E. L. Collins, of Portland, is up for a few days' visit at the home of his father, Judge J. L. Collins. The Rev. G. W. Pettit returned last night from a few days' visit with friends and relatives in Portland. V. B. Sears, of Ballston, who has been attending to business matters in this city, returned home yesterday. Statesman. DeWitt Harris phoned over from Salem yesterday that Mrs. Harris, who has been under medical care In the hospital for some time, is much improved and that she will be able to return to Dallas by the last of the week.
