Entered aa acond -clank matter March 1, at the poat office at !),, Oregon, under Act of Cointreau ol Marco 3. 17. IMLLAH, OKEOON, jAKKiEV IS, W 7"A way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. Id th: beginning of his message to thfl Loiblat.ure, Governor Chamber lain Bays: ''Tho provisions of the direct primary nominating law, with respect to the election of a United States aeuator should be carried out in letter uti'J in spirit," and expands upon that statement through several paragraphs. Why rub It in so hard, George? The ".Smiles" In Wednesday's issue of the Capital Journal aptly say. ' Jones, of Lincoln and Polk, says if the committee on resolutions cuts birn off without clerks to investigate the books and accounts of the Insane asylum, he will hire a clerk and book keeper at his own expense and will investigate anyway. There is no stop ping Jones when he starts to do some thing be thinks is right, unless you pais the road roller over him." The injunction frequently repeated during the past week by the Portland papers to "feed the birds" is one that may well be heeded not by townsmen alone but by dwellers in the rural districts. The latter are in a position that admirably fits them for carrying out that advice In a most effective manner. Quails, pheasants and other game birds, wuose homes are in the rural disti ids exclusively are probably the worst sufferers from cold and starvation and it is in the bands of the people of the country districts that their sulvittion li"S. The tax levy for I'olk county is 15. C mills this year, 4 1 mills higher than the levy of last y-ar, but, considering the Increased expenses for much needed road improvement during tin past year, the additional expense for still more of the same kind of pro gressive work during the year to come, and the fact that the assessed valuation of the property in i'olk I county during ivm was about $2'j,000 less than that of l!w7, the new levy does not seem exhorbitant. The levy is divided as follows : State, :j 'j mills; ! county, &.'.) mills; school, i.H mills; I roads, 3 mills. The city levy is 10 mills, making tin: total levy for resi dents of Dallas 0 mills. I The residence of J. Thurston, near ISuver, caught tire Tuesday night and was totally destroyed together witn ! nearly all of its contents. The house j was comparatively new and bad been newly furnished just beforeChri8tma9, ana the loss is particularly ueay. Mr. and Mrs. Thurston, both elderly Deonle. and their hired man, were the onlv ones in the house when the fire i started and were unable to fight the ; flames effectively, while help from the ; neighbors could not be summoned 'until it was too late to save the i building. I WISE TALKS BY M. D. ! OFFICE BOY, ELLIS' i Happy New Year! You bet I am j happy to think my boss is so good to I me. Say, he seerns to know his busi I ness. Why he treats everyone just ! like tbey were one of his family. Gee, nut he is buying lots or new gocas! I don't know where he will put them. The store is so full now we can't hardly turn around. Ma says "a kind word thrown at a husband will go farther towards a new bonnet than a rolling pin will." She gets up in i the air at lJa occa.-ionally and they j hand each other a few packages. I ! heard her say the other day, "It's no j disgrace for a woman to make a mis take in rnarryine, almost every ! woman does it. Ihatwill hold him for a while, X guess. I've come to the i conclusion that a woman gets the j worst of it in mo'jt cases. Why, hon 'est, I don't know what Pit would do without a woman like Ma to keep hitn I in the straight and narrow and have j bim look respectable. Andl don't know where he'd g-t off for his meals if Ma j didn't cook for biin and get all the I groceries at M. L). Ellis's. It's all I right for a change to eat in the res ' taurant, but for a steady diet, there's i nothing like good home cooking. jSoine people laugh when they see a sign, "Home Cooking," on some lady s door, but you bet it's all right if she know how to juggle the kitchen tools and knows where to buy th good stuff to make a noise on the kitchen stove.
