MYSTIFIES HIS AUDIENCE Karl Germain Appears In Dallas In Marvelous Exhibitions of Magical Work. Karl Germain, the magician who appeared at the Woodman Hall, Wed nesday night under the auspices of Dallas College, gave an entertain ment whose merits far surpassed the expectations of those in the large audience which had assembled to witness bis performance. As a slight-of-hand performer, Mr, Uertnain stands in a class alone. His feats in this line of work were a source of delight and bewilderment to his audience. Starting, as he remarked, "with a small bit of nothing" he seemed to be able to pro duce anything from a silk handerchief to a complete service, managing his tricks with such perfection as to make the changes impossible of detection and producing a series of the cleverest and most beautiful illusions imagin able. His man ner on the stage is extremely suave and pleasing, his graceful ges turing in the performance of his tricks being accompanied by a flow of witty and entertaining conversation.; The Germain entertainment is by far the best that has been produced in the Lyceum course of entertainments in this city and Dallas College, under whose auspices it was given is to be congratulated on having been able to secure a visit from one who stands foremost in the ranks of the magicians and sleight of hand performers before the public today. The Dallas College basketball team will go to Suletn today to play its first League game against the team of Willamette University. Dallas now stands second in the Oregon League and Willamette University sixth, but owing to the new lineup in the Dallas five, Manager VanOrsdel expects to have a bard rub in tonights' game to maintain his aggregation in its pres ent standing. Thus far the various teams are running close to their stand ing in the league and it looks as though the award of the pennant might fall to any of them. Multnomah Athletic Club still holds first place, but the loss of of one single game on the part of the clubmen would alter the whole aspect of the contest. Homestead Cases Still On. The homestead cases in which County Clerk Smith has been taking testimony since Tuesday are still being carried on and will probably not be finished before the end of the week. Testimony in the cases concerning the claims of Richard Paul, J. H. Dunn and J. Crowtber has already been taken and yesterday the case of the late William H. Butz was heard. LAND REDWING'S SCALP Oregons Win More Victories Defeat Old-Time Opponents By Decisive Scores., The Oregons are now playing in one of the strongest basketball sections of the United States and, with the exception of its recent reverses at Minneapolis and Stillwater has been carrying everything before it. No report has been received of any game played Monday night and it is understood that The Oregons and the team in Hudson were unable to meet on that date. Tuesday and Wednesday night the Oregon boys were matohed against the famous Redwing five whom they defeated by a narrow margin in Dallas two years ago, while the Red wings were en tour of the Pacific Coast. The scores of the two recent games indicate that Redwing has either weakened since the time of its tour, or Dallas has gained enormously in strength, for in both games the latter were victorious by exceedingly high scores considering the mettle of the two contesting aggregations. The score Tuesday night was 23 to 16 in favor of The Oregons, and on Wednes day night 27 to 9. Both games were rough but the best feeling existed be tween the opposing teams. The boys report that as they pro gress eastward they are able to observe les3 and leas of the swift snappy team work which characterizes basketball of the Pacific Coast, and more and more reliance, on the part of their opponents, upon weight, strength and the individual brilliancy of their players to carry the game. This characteristic of the Eastern play results in much harder and rougher contests than the open system and short passing employed by Westerners. Although the scores in the games at Minneapolis and Stillwater materially reduce the score, the total number of points still shows that The Oregons are maintaining an enormous lead over their opponents. The total of the scores of game up to and including Wednesday night is as follows : Oregons, 43 Vancouver, Oregons, 34 ' Winlock, Oregons, 34 Seattle, Oregons, 42 Rossly n, Oregons, 57 Ellensburg, Oregons, 55 Spokane, Oregons, 22......
