An Icehouse and cool room nuiy be constructed as follows: Excavate a half cellar in a perfectly dry place, from which the surface slopes (or may be made to slope) in all directions, so as to prevent danger of moisture from want of drainage. A stone or ijricK wall is built around this and laid in hydraulic cement. The door is ce mented. A frame or other building Is built uiioii this basement to contain the Ice. Twelve feet square will be huge enough for n moderate sized fain- seed, and it is believed that no perma nent improvement In quality or yield Is to be expected from the use of the fanning mill In seed selection. At first thought It would seem that if "like produces like-' the large or heavy seeds should produce the best crop. However, we must recognize the individual plant as a unit for selection rather than the Individual seed. If a single plant of wheat be taken and the kernels thrashed out it will be found that all sizes of kernels are produced bv the plant, some large and some small. As every wheat plant contains both heavy and light seed, the fanning mill gives almost the same kind of wheat, so far as inheritance is concerned, in the light wheat as in the heavy. It J must be remembered that reference is j made here to the permanent results which may be expected from the use of the fanning mill and that Its use or the use of screens for removing ol- I noxious weed seed is in no way discour aged. Many glowing prospectuses are being offered to the public on this basis. It should be remembered, how ever, that the production and use of natural oil are rapidly increasing, that gas and electricity for heating pur poses are cheap in the cities and that all three are coming more and more into use every day in the place of wood, in fact, wood as fuel is rapid ly becoming a luxury, and there is in the mind of the writer no reason for expecting any increase iu its use as fuel by the general public. He there fore believes it unprofitable and un- wise to enter upon eucalyptus plant ing with the sole idea of raising wood for fuel. The profits to be derived from eucalyptus in the future will be found in hardwood lumber for wagon work, farm and other implements, rail road, coach and house linishings, fur niture, etc. Ties, telephone poles and bridge timber will also prove profita ble. For any of the above named products of eucalyptus at least ten years' growth will be required, and of course the older the trees the greater the profits in proportion. The wood of most of the eucalypts makes good fuel. A grove of blue gums tive years old. set out 0 by 0 feet apart, under favorable conditions the capacity of the house. If the house is to be used in ex tremely cold weather an ea.sily manip ulated door Is necessary. The cut shows n door two feet wide and two feet six Inches high, made to slide up and down and held in place by cleats. It Is suspended by n rope which passes through a pulley at the top and is fastened to a cleat at the side near the roof. The cut also shows two iron eyes, bolted into the front joist of the building, to which the hitch is made when the building is moved. A rear door, identical in size with the front door, is held in piace Dy cleats nailed across it on ine msiue and by buttons fastened on the outside-. This must be perfectly air tight and a moderately good conductor of heat. The floor may be laid in the following manner: Heams of sufficient strengtli are laid across and the cuds well bedded lu ce ment. A floor of zinc sheets is then laid upon the beams, the sheets being closely nailed to the beams upon strips of rubber sheeting to make the joints water and air tight. The beams shuuld be dressed smoothly. The zinc sheets are bent, as shown iu the illustration (KIg. 2). This is for the purpose of causing the moisture, which will con dense upon the underside of this ceil ing, to tlow downward to the lower angle, where it will drip. The drip Is caught in the little gutters of zinc shown in the figure attached to the ceiling and is carried off by a proper drain Willi this water will also be carried off much of the Impurity of the atmosphere, and If very little ven tilation is given there will be little condensation and the air will be kept SEED WHEAT. Grade Generally Used Not Up to the Standard. That the grade of seed wheat gen erally used is not up to the standard was ascertained In an Investigation by C W. Shaw of the California station, w ho secured a large number of sam ples of seed wheat over a wide area in the Sacramento and San Joaquin val leys of California to determine the general character of the seed used by the farmers of the state. Iu general the samples showed that the quality of seed used by most farmers is lack ing in purity, perfection of develop ment, weight per bushel, freedom from weeds and freedom from bunt. It is stated that practically all investigu tors have found the use of large, plump seed and of a high weight per bushel the most profitable. No perma nent benefit Is believed to lie secured from thi frequent exchange of seed unless a better type of wheat or a inure vigorous strain of the same type Is obtained by the exchange. The use of seed from heavy yielding plants, a plump and heavy grain, a clean wheat mid a pure variety are considered by 1 1 1 in the most Important points Iu seed seliH'lioli III this connection the results secur ed by K. !. Montgomery of the Ne braska station lu an experiment with veil wheat and seed oats selected by the use of the fanning mill are of in terest. In these experiments heavy will wheat as separated by the fan ning mill did not show an Improve ment in eiihcr ield or quality of grain hi compared with light or lmseparatod to be made into vinegar from time to time. A good wine or alcohol barrel is carefully painted on the outside to pre vent corrosion of the hoops. A vent, hole is now bored in each end of the cask near the chime on the side next the bung and covered with n fine screen to keep out insects. At the bot tom of one end a spigot is inserted and a perpendicular row of gimlet holes bored and fitted with wooden plugs to act a.j a gauge. Fresh wine, which must first be fully fermented, can be added from time to time through a tube passing in at the bunghole and ending near the bottom of the cask. In this way the active film will not be disturbed by drawing off a little vine gar or adding a little fresh wine. The tube must not be of metal, but can be of glass where available. In this re gion a large stalk of native cane, the joints of which have been perforated with a hot iron, makes a very service able tube. A tin funnel may be used In pouring the wine into the tube. A similar apparatus has been found very serviceable in France for converting table wine waste into vinegar. Such wastes under suitable temperature conditions yield good vinegar in nine ty days. The generator is started with a mixture of about three-fourths wine and one-fourth good vinegar. When once started no new vinegar need be added. SILAGE FOR MILK COWS. Most Profitable Way to Feed This Valuable Ration. By M. A. GOODRICH. Perhaps there is more benefit derived from silage by feeding it to milk cows than by feeding it to any other kind of stock. At any rate, it is used more and thought more of by dairymen than bv ii ii v other class of farmers. Cows should never be fed exclusively on silage. They need some dry forage to go with it; they need a variety. Be sides this, corn silage is a carbona ceous food nnd needs some more nitrog enous food to go with It to make a well balanced ration. About thirty or at most forty pounds a day of silage is as much as should be fed to each cow. It should be fed from the top of the silo, taking off about two Inches in depth from the entire sur face each day, for if It is long exposed to the air it will be damaged. If the feeding commences Immediately after filling the silo and this Is a good way to do It there will be no damaged silage at nil. Care should be taken at each time of feeding to leave the sur face smooth and even nnd not pick and stir it up with the fork, for that will let in the air and cause damage. My way Is to feed the silage ration in two feeds, both night and morning, and It is better to feed after milking, because the peculiar odor of the silage might affect the flavor of the milk. Cows as well as other stock have a wonderful liking for silage, and I be lieve much of tlfe success In feeding It can be attributed to its palatability. They even prefer it. to a certain ex tent at lenst, to fresh cut forage or good grass In the pasture. I have seen eows in June when on good pasture which had been fed silage every day tome to the gate at 4 o'clock In the afternoon nnd bellow and ask to come to (lie barn and get silage, which they would eat greedily and apparently with great relish. I have seen the ex periment tried of offering the cows at the same time corn cut fresh from the fields and silage that was put up the year before. Every cow chose the silage nnd nte that first. It s true these cows had been fed silage every day all summer, and it may be the habit of eating silage had something to do with their preferring It. but they surely would not have done it If silage had not been pretty good feed. There Is n better and cheaper feed to supplement short pastures, which we are almost sure to hnve every sum mer on account of drought or other causes, than good silage. I know some of the most miecessful dairymen In the country who feed silage every day In the year, winter as well as summer. THE GUINEA IN DISGUISE.
