Polk County Observer ALLGOOD te COLLINS LESSEES Publiahed Scml-Weekly at 11.60 per Year. Strictly In Advance. Entered an flecond-claKH matter March 1, 1007, at the post office at DuIIhb, Oregon, under the Act of Congress ol March 3, 1879. DALLAS, OREGON, Januakv 1, 1909 The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. human beings, anxious to turn in aid and sympathy to our brethren who were less fortunate than we. Now again, when the call comes from another quarter, the broken and smoking plains of southern Italy, the result is the same the whole human race turns In an instant to the work of succor. It is such things as this that throw a softening light over things whose horrors would be otherwise unendurable and it is such things as this that make the beat answer in the world to the sneer of the cynic I against humanity. BUSINESS LOCALS. A NEW YEAR'S EVE IYRIC. A MEASURE OF THE FUTURE. This day of all days of the year, stands in a position at once pros pective and retrospective. Instinc tively, before we consign it per manently into the hands of the historian, we pause to take stock of the events and achievements of the year just closed, mentally checking them off one by one in comparison with those of the coming year as we already imagine it. And indeed the year 19U8 is one in which we may, for the most part, take both pride and pleasure. In national affairs, especially those bearing on industry and commerce, the record is much brighter than most of us would have prophesied a year ago. Beginning a year with practi cally every branch of the important industries paralyzed by the llnaucial panic of the Fall of 1907, the year has seen a prompt and practically com plete return of the country to a normal condition of prosperity. Itisprobable that no period of equal duration has witnessed such an enormous recuper ative growth. Passing from the broader topics of the year's review to those of more immediate local interest, we find in our own state, our own county, our own city, the same record of develop ment. True, in some few poiDts we may have retrograded, but taken in the main, it is evident that Polk county stands, in nearlyevery respect, considerably in advance of where she stood a year ago today. As one checks back over the events of the year just closed, comparing them with those of the year in pros pect, one always weighs the events of the coming jear with a more lenient scale than those of the past and sel dom do the actual facts measure up to the roseate prophecies. This year, however, we may sitMy take an opti mistic measure of the future, because last year, although laboring under the adverse itilluence of industrial depression, we not only made up the lost ground, but even advanced. Now we stand on the threshold of a new year, a year during which the attention of the world is to be more forcibly directed to the Pacilllc Coast than ever before, and in view of all this, it is safe to prophesy for our own state, a year of far greater growth in all lines than ever before and the lay ing of the foundation for a growth during the succeeding years whose magnitude shall bo almost inconceivable.
