FAVORS APPROPRIATION Representative B. F. Jones Wants Oregon to Shine at Alaska Yukon Exposition. B. F. Jones, of Independence, representative-elect from Polk and Lincoln counties, believes that the legislature oiiRht to appropriate $.50,000 for the additional use of the Oregon commis sion to the Alaska-Yukon exposition if the commission can show that they need the money. He also holds that the Washington exposition will be of as creitt benefit to Oregon as the Lewis and Clark exposition was in l:i0j. When Dan Malarkiy asked the legislatun; for f 300,000 for the Lewis and Clark exposition I seconded his request, said Mr. Jones recently, nnen i returned noma a lot or my people jumped on me fur what I had done. They see how tho country has grown since the exposition and they realize that it was the exposition that started it. If the tiling was to be done over again, my constituents would pat me on my back if I voted for f 1,000,000 appropriation. "The Washington exposition is next door to us," continued Mr. Jones. "The people who come to see that show will come to see Oregon. Therefore I believe that Oregon ought either to keep clear out of the show or go in with tho intention of beating Wash ington in exhibits and advertising efforts. If we go up there we ought to go up to win all blue ribbons, and we can if we go after thorn. Therefore if the Oregon commission needs $,50,000 more I think the legislature ought to give it to them." Representative Jones is still working for the success of his Willamette locks bill, and hopes to bo able to pass it through tho next session. Portland Journal. PROBATE. Farm and Garden AN INEXPENSIVE ICEHOUSE. No Reason Why the Farmer Should Be Without It. An Icehouse and cool room may be constructed as follows: Excavate a half cellar in a perfectly dry place, from which the surface slopes (or may be made to slope) in all direct ions, so ns to prevent danger of moisture from want of drainage. A stone or brick wall is built around this and laid In hydraulic cement. The Moor Is ce mented. A frame or oilier building Is built upon this basement to contain the Ice. Twelve feet square will be large enough for a moderate sized fam- ji gnn njimvp ' ::Vll I :t;W Hd. I.- IC. HOI SE AND COOL IIOOM- lly. as an icehouse or that size will hold about twenty loads or tons of Ice. The inn in point Is the division be tween the icehouse and the room be low ll. This must be perfectly un tight and a moderately good conductor of heat. The llonr may lie laid 111 the following manner: Renins of suUlclenl strength are laid across and the ends well bedded in ce ment. A floor of zinc sheets Is then laid upon the beams. Hie sheds being closely milled to the beams upon strips of rubber sheeting to make the Joints water nud air tight. The beams aliniild be dressed smoothly. The zinc sheets are bent, ns shown In the Illustration (Fig. lil. This Is for the purpose of causing (he moisture, which will con dense upon the underside of this cell ing, to How downward to the lower angle, where It w ill drip. The drip Is caught In the little gliders of zinc shown in (he figure attached to the celling and Is carried off by a proper drain With this water will also be carried off much of Hie Impurity of tl' tit Unisphere, ami If very little ven tilation Is given there will be little condensation and the air will be kept Market Hogs. I What kind of hog will bring the most money in the market, and what breed will make the best market hog'; ! These are iiiestioiis hard to answer ; definitely. Markets vary us to the class of hogs that will sell at the top. When lard is at a premium the ho; that yields a large amount of !ard Is the market topper, and that means the heavy, thick, fat hog. When lard is below other products this kind of hog sells for less than the light weight which will make handy pork I i'K and good hams without too mu Ii t.it on t lie-in. Taking one year with another in eastern markets, the hog of 180 t 20o pounds will hit the top oftener than any other weight. In western markets hogs of around "."0 pound will probably average best. Some times lighter or heavier hogs will out sell I hose grades, according to the fluctuations in price of the product. In summer Imu prices covet the widest range because" There is the greatest dilTcrence In the yield of product at this season. In the winter all hogs are corn fed and yield more uniform quan tities of product, in summer many are grassers that make low yields and of inferior quality to corn fed hogs. A '-'HO pound hog that dresses 8() per cent yields liifi pounds, one that dress es 7.1 per cent yields l."0 pounds, and one that dresses 7n per cent vlelds only 1 10 pounds, an enormous differ ence in a carload of hogs, which the buyer makes allowance for In buying tlietii on foot. As a rule, of late the best hogs have been the cheapest on the hooks at the top of the market be cause they bine yielded so much more product than the others, which looked cheaper to t lie Inexperienced observer. As to the breed that killers like best, probably more would answer Rerk shire than any other breed. But hogs are what killers want, and the kind they want will top the market, wheth er black, while, red or spotted. DR. ELBERT E.
