The social to be given by the mem bers of the Methodist Church tonight has been carefully prepared for and a most enjoyable evening is promised all who attend. The work of invoicing the stock in the Faull hardware store has been fin ished and Craven Brothers, the new proprietors have taken charge of the establishment W. T. Belcher was .in Dallas, Tues day, enroute from Portland to Falls City. Mr. Belcher has recently re turned from an extended business trip to Chicago. R. L. Chapman has had the whole of his 1908 crop of prunes hauled from tbe warehouse at his evaporator to the warehouse in Dallas for shipment to eastern markets. Mrs. Edward Gerlinger and daugh ter went to Portland yesterday for a short visit. Mr. Gerlinger is now in business in Portland and expects to move his family to that city after the holidays. Earl Rife was arrested In Oregon City, Tuesday, by Constable Miles upon complaint of the Polk county authorities. Rife is wanted at Mon mouth on a charge of stealing tools and money from a butcher shop where he was working. He fled from hla home on Tuesday morning of last week. The School Officers' Convention for Polk county will meet in the Court house tomorrow morning and a large attendance, not only of the school offi cers, but of the teachers and friends of educational work throughout the county is assured. The chairman of each school board represented is to receive $2 as compensation for attend ing the convention, but many of tbe chairmen have informed Superinten- ent Seymour that they intend bringing their entire school board with them and using the $2 fee to defray tbe expenses of the trip. State Superin tendent J. H. Ackerman will be pres ent and will assist in the discussion of tbe various subjects that will be brought before the assembly. A num ber of other prominent educators will also be in attendance. Basketball Game Tomorrow Night. Tomorrow night's game of basket ball between tbe Dallas College team and the Portland Y. M. C. A. team will probably be one of the hardest games of the season. Both teams are exceptionally strong this season, both equally anxious to win the league championship and the resulting struggle is sure to be very severe. The Dallas team is in excellent con dition for tbe game and the players express the highest confidence in their ability to win by a creditable score although their margin will no doubt be closer than in the recent game with McMinnville college;. E. C. Kirkpatrick received a letter recently telling of the death of Mrs. Hale Backenstow, at her home Ht Ocean Side, California, Mr. and Mrs. Backenstow were residents of Dallas for several years and are well remem bered by many of the people here. Whiteside & Cooper have changed the name of their moving picture theater from the Electrio Pal ace to the Star Theater. A large elec trio star was received yesterday and installed in front of the building as a suitablesign to represent its new name. The management is continually im proving the little theater and It will now rank easily as high as some of tbe best moving picture theaters in the larger cities. Retirement Notice. I have disposed of my hardware business in Dallas to tbe Craven Brothers and am contemplating trav eling for the benefit of my health. Tbe little fellow Is suffering from tubercular glands and will be obliged to undergo a surgical operation. Tbe North Dallas public school will give a box social in tbe new school house Friday night December 11, at 8 o'clock, tbe proceeds to be usod for the furnishing and Improvement of the scboolhouse. A fine program has been prepared and everyone is Invited to attend. The Rev. Curtis P. Coe of the Baptist church announoes regular preaching services for next Sunday, with Sunday School at 10 a. m. and prayer services at 6 :30. The evening sermon will be the second of the series on The Parables of Jesus." Tbe Women's Foreign Missionary Society met at tbe home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan P. 8touffer, Tuesday after noon. About 24 women were present and the time waa most pleasantly i spent, a short program being given and light refreshments served during the afternoon.
