Tht -way to build Dallas u to pal ronist Dallas people. mina, Friday, to investigate the cir cumstances of the death of Tom Gil bert, an Indian of the Grand Ronde reservation, who met his end Thurs day night is the waters of the Yamhill j river near that place. Now is the Time to visit California provement. An enthusiastic meeting of citizens ' was held in "Brush college." four ! miles west of Salem a few nights ago! where it was learned the rock crusher; belonging to Polk county was idle' Gilbert left Willamina late Tburs-! and certain of the officials had said it day, considerably under the influence ; would be possible to get the county toj of liquor but still sober enough to sit operate it for the roads of this section i on bis horse's back. Earlv next ! if the citizens would bind themselves; morning bis lifeless body was found , to take the rock from the crusher and ! in the river about one and a half miles j place it upon the roads. from Willamina. i The meeting designated a large; Yesterday marked the close of the poorest pheasant season for several years in the Willamette Valley, but not eo poor a season as soon will be unless some measures are taken for the better protection of Oregon's beautiful game birds. The apple show in Portland will be the feature of the present week for all Oregon. Polk county should be well represented both in the attendance and in the list of the exhibits and, if given the representation in the latter that Khe (should be given, ought to come in for a ooodly share of the prizes awarded. With the jails of Multnomah county crowded with murderers trying by some means (usually an insanity plea to cheat the gallows, comes yet another, J. A. Finch, and begins to show symp toms of the prevaling mania whose cloak huB already proven to often to be the refuge of a criminal fleeing from justice. The coroner's jury wasted only a few minutes In correctly diagnosing that particular form of rubies, however, and the question now Is whether the trial jury will uphold its verdict or continue to let the "do inontlu" farce olog tho wheels of the machinery of justice. The era of small farming tracts scums to bo upon us in Polk county and for that fuct wo should congratu late ourselves, for It means ulsoan era of Increasing prosperity in the county. In a score of places holders of large furms havo bad them platted out Into tracts of from 10 to 40 acres and are ofierltig them for sule. The result will be an Increase lu Immigra tion, a more thorough und scientific cultivation of tho land, development of new Industries and In tho near future, a condition of prosperity In Polk county that will iiutko all past records pale Into insignificance. He had wandered from the road and j committee i fallen over the steep bank into thejcourt and wader and bis coat, catching behind in some vine maple saplings, held him in the water up to his chin in spite of his frantic struggles to get out There was no water in bis lungs, so bis death could not be attributed to drowning, and there were no marks of violence on his body. The clay bank in front of him was scratched and torn where his fingers had slipped through the moist earth in a vain effort to hold, as the limber branches dragged him back Into the water after I each fruitless effort to climb out. Apparently he had repeatedly at tempted to clear himself from the entangling vines until his strength oecame exnausten ana ne was dragged back and held irresistibly in the icy water and slowly chilled to death. He was a man about 65 years old and had spent the greater part of his life on the reservation. He has sev eral relatives also living on the reser vation, two or nis nephews were present at the inquest and seemed inclined to attribute his death to foul play although none of the circum stances give any grounds for such an Impression. to wait upon the county see if the crusher can be secured on the terms stated, and if so, i to take steps to pledge the work neces-1 sary to handle the crushed rock. The committee will wait upon the Polk county court on Wednesday, December 2. sentiment at the meeting left noi doubt but that more than ample men and teams will be furnished to handle ! all the rock the crusher can supply. The road rn he renaired is the one ! teauiug u'jwu tue rjverirum tueoaieui j bridge, which, it was argued, needs only the final coating of crushed rock to make it permanent and one of the best in the state. "The Oregons" have conferred upon Edward Shaw, their big center, the honor of the captaincy of the basket ball team during its Eastern tour. Mr. Shaw is well worthy of the position given him, for during the past five years, in which he has continuously been a player on the Dallas team, he has proven himself a man thoroughly to be relied upon and admirably fitted for tbe leadership of a team. Gifted with exceptional physical strength and speed, he has also that quality of coolness and rapidity of decision that makesthe ideal basketball player. In his whole basketball career there has scarcely been a time when the specta tors could say that Shaw lost bis bead or failed to play up to his average and "The Oregons" have shown excel lent judgment in selecting a man of hia ability to act as their captain.
