About Polk County observer. (Monmouth, Polk County, Or.) 1888-1927 | View Entire Issue (Nov. 13, 1908)
Polk County Observer ALLGOOD & COLLINS LESSEES Published 8eml-Weekly at 11.50 per Yer. Strictly in Advance. Kntoreri aa futcond-c'.ass matter March 1, 1907, at the pot office at Dullaa, Oregon, under the Act ol Conirress oi Marcn a, isiv. DALLAS, OREGON, Novembkb 13 1808. The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. Real estate, one of the best barom eters of the prosperity and busioess activity of a city, is beginning to move more freely than for several months, and real estate dealers In this city are anticipating a better year than ever before in their line of busines. Democratic representatives favor ing an increase of tariff and Republi can representatives opposing the increase was the situation in Wash ington recently. Now, by the way, wasn't tariff revision one of the issues on which the Democrats had so much to cry for some time before the third of November? "0 Consistency etc" we all remember the old quotation. What will probably be one of the greatest rifle competitions in the world's history is to be held next Hep tember at Camp Perry. I'reliminary announcement of this big competition was received Monday by Adjutant floneral W. E. Finzer, of the Oregon National Guard, from the National Hoard of Promotion of Rifle Practice. Dallas gained an excellent position among the rillemen of Oregon In the regimental shooting contest recently completed, H. B. Stlngloy, of this city, ranking among the 20 most export marksmen in the regiment. It is not too much to hope thut Dallas may mako a strong bid for a place In the team that is to represent the "citizen soldiers" of America in the inter national contest nt Camp Perry. THE APPLE FAIR. Tho result of the prize awards at the Albany Apple Fair gives much for tho people of the Willamette Valley and the pooplo of Polk county to bo proud of. One thing over which the apple growors of the entire valley may con gratulate themselves and are con gratulating themselves is tho won derful showing mado by tho Valley apples in comparison with tho vauntod Hood Ulvor product. Linn, Lane, Benton, Marion and Polk counties all came in for a share of the awards and the first prizo for the host box of applos commercially packed went to II. C. tlushucll, of Junction City, whose dis play was In competition with those of other valley growors who had secured professional packers from Hood River to prepare their exhibits. The winning of that award by Mr. jiusnnoii, leaua local growers to declare (and reasonably to) that the art of successful commercial packing has ceased at last to bo an art peculiar to the famous Hood River country and the Willamette Valley is at last beginning to coino into its own as the premier apple raising district of the world. Coming nearer home, to a tnplo of local Importance, Polk county has cause for self congratulation from tho fact that although her representation was comparatively meager, she suc ceeded In carrying off second prize for her county exhibit, while tho showing made by her Individual exhibitors was also exceptionally good. Tho Willamette Valley should be tho applo renter of tho world and Polk county with Its rich, red hill soil, should 1 the apple center of tho Wil lamette alley, and the results of the Albany Applo Fair Indicate that the day when these things shall be is not far off. Jubilee Sinirrra Coming. Watklns' Tennessee Jubilee Singers, one of tho strongest troupes of negro singers before the American public this season will appear in Dallas at Woodman Hall, Salurdt- evening, November H. under the auspices of the Dallas Public School. The pro-cei-ds of the entertainment will be applied to the puichase of new lnoks for the srhool library. The members of the Y. M. O.
