The editor of a oontemporary takes
pleasure in making loud sport,
through the medium of his news col
umns, of the Taft-Shermaa Club
recently organized In this city. In a
conspicuous place on bis editorial
page, however, large black type, that
"he who runs may read" with ease,
cries that "Polk County should sup
port several Bryan and Kern Clubs
and the work of organizing should be
started at once." An old and often
quoted proverb has said that consist
ency is a Jewel, but alas, it is only too
often found to be a Jowel whose rarity
surpasses that of diamonds and
rubles.
THE HEM'S LAMEXT.
An heir to Roosevelt forsooth?
Alas what pood to me
If be heir to Theodore
And Teddy awatteth me!
Within his will he writes It plain
And none may say him or,
"I leave my all to Wiliinm? leal
But not to William J."
Roweruel Fate' envenomed shaft!
The Will he meaua is William Tart!
Ab, not to me my sire has willed
That beftv stielc at hia!
Ab. not to me dtHh Theodore
Beoueath "Mv Policies"!
Within his will, alack too plain.
The cruel sire doth av.
"I leave tuioe all to William H.,
But not to William J."
And I must slink in shame awav,
I am not William H., but J.
How prodigal fn years pone by.
With seal of vouthful lire
I sought in many a fell campaign
To swat mine august sire.
I reverenced not bis hefty slick,
I bucked bis policies-
Alas, too late I turn to them
And iret instead a freeze.
My hopes are strewn like shattered
caaff
And I have lost my fatted calf.
Ah how the voters scoff at me
And mock me more and more.
Who said I was the rightful heir
Unto Great TBeodore:
For when I claimed my legacy
Ana wnen ine will was read
They found Bill Taft was It, while I
n as aisinneniea.
I can't make good my heirship boast
And that's what augers me the most.
When, tired of busks, I wandered back
Unto my father's bouse.
The only welcome I received
Was just one order "Baus !"
Forlorn without the portals grim,
I heard his beartv laugn
"My son here, William H., shall have
The fat and toothsome calf."
And sol stole in grief away
I am not William fl., but J.
Cast out, disowned, despised, forlorn
And dismnerited.
Cut otf without a sou, a bean,
a smiling or a red ;
Vain, empty were the claims I madel
Alack, wnat proms me
If I be heir to Theodore,
And Teddv swatteth me!
Ti8 up to me to fade away
am not William 11., but J.

Briefly Told.
Monday, September 28, the public
sonoois or Dallas win begin a new
year and it has been found necessary
to build a new building near the main
school bouse to accommodate the in
creased attendance. When this main
school building was erected only a few
years ago, many of the people of this
district were almost appalled at its
slznand declared that Dallas wouldn't
grow enough In 20 years to need all
thesohool room supplied by the new
house. Something like seven years
years have elapsed and already we are
building new rooms to accommodate
the overflow of attendance. Dallas
has grown faster by about 12 years
than those who once made a hasty
estimate anticipated.
Demanding from President Boose
velt proof of the accusations be bad
made against C. N. Haskell, treasurer
of the Democratic National Com
mittee, Mr. Bryan has received proofs
and has received tbem with vengence.
It Is not one of Theodore's traits to do
things by halves. Thusfar the Be
publioans have kindly furnished with
startling promptness, whatsoever the
Democrats have asked, even to fur
nishing the names of certain persons
who "flopped" In the registration
before the primaries. Beally one
would think that they might finally
get trifle tired of having such plain,
unvarnished and sometimes unpleas
ant truths banded to them whenever
tbey asked for tbem and would become
a little less eager In their appeals In
future.

George McDowell, whose spine was
broken in a fall from a bop bouse near

little improved since he recovered from

the injury. He is perfectly conscious
