Entered ai second-claws matter March 1. 1907, at the poat ottic at Dallas, Oregon, under the Act ol Congress ol March S. 18U. DALLAS, OREGON, Septembks 8, 1908. The way to build up Dallas ts to pat ronize Dallas people. A SIGN OF THE TIMES. The surest elgo of conscious im po tency Id the face of Inevitable defeat is a blind endeavor to make up for weak' cess in defenseby swiftness and feroc ity of attack. A pugilist in the face of defeat, will cast aside all efforts for defense and rain aimless blows at bis opponent, hoping against reason that perhaps one of them may strike home and turn the scale in his favor. A wild beast, crowded to its last corner, will burl itself upon the hunters regardless of a dozen mortal thrusts, in a blind, unreasoning hope that it may possibly break through and gain safety, although Its efforts are mani festly vain. The same sign holds good In struggles of a different nature, as, for example, an important political contest, like that which even now is holding the interest of the American people. It is a significant fact that while the Republican press, in the main, has endeavored to make lu arguments in favor of the principle of lt party and the man chosen to represent those principals, clear and pertinent, and while tbey have been to a truly remarkable degree free from sophistry and speciousness and the hollow demagoguery that is so prone to creep into arguments of a political nature, the Democratic press has almost as unfailingly, almost as universally, followed exactly the opposite method. This may be a sweeping assertion, but It Is not beyond the possibility of a fairly satisfactory proof. Let anyone take the representative newspapers of Oregon or of any state In fact, for one week, divide them along the lines of partisanship, read carefully their editorial discussions of the various phases of the political situation, and strike a fair average of their methods In dealing with the subject True, many Democratic papers endeavor to mold their defense and attack along the legitimate lines of logical and consistent argument, argument which is bound to have Its weight with any tbiuklng man, though his own convictions may be exactly to the contrary. True, into many of the editorial utterances of Republican organs creeps the vanity of sophistry and the empty appeals of blank demagoguery, arguments that can have no weight of conviction whatsoever with the voter who regards each subject carefully before either sanctioning or condemning It, even though bis whole sympathy may be with the cause which those puxrs are trying to support. Still, when the average Is fairly struck, these things demost plainly appear to the careful reader, that while Republicanism is making a fair, open, anil logical fight, attending well to both attack and defense, and refraining wonder fully well from the use of those weaker weapons above mentioned, ltsoponent Is attacking boldly, venomously, recklessly, almost utterly disregard ing defense while It lays desperately hold of anything and everything that may perchance serve as a w?uxu against lu opponent. Every manner of sophistry Is em ployed, some arguments being brought forward seriously for consideration, which ate so palpably a mere jug gling of facts and phrases capable of convincing no one except ho be half wltted or wholly careless, that the reader often sorrowfully lays down his paper and wonders if after all, a man must be devoid of a sense of pro portion and a sense of humor to be a successful writer of "forlorn hope" editorial. The fact cornea up that Mr. Taft, the Republican candidate, is a Unitarian, a fact that has been known well during the past years In which Mr. Taft has filled at different time a half dosen office of trust and honor under the people of the I'olted States, and a fact which has, up to the present time, raused apparently no uneasiness whatever to that great people whom be baa been serving so well and faith fully. Now however, seeing in it a bare possibility of scoring a point against him, the Democratic press siezes upon it and blazons it abroad with every conceivable manner of dis tortion and lurid drapery of words. They howl, they roar, they shrink back in holy horror and point at the sell-confessed and unrepentent heretic, comparing him (to bis vast discredit In their estimation)-with bis saiatly and severely orthodox antagonist. Editors who have probably wasted not a single thought on the hereafter for years and hava never before puzzled tbelr Louis with the inexplicable mysteries of the Trinity, are suddenly siezed with a fit of the religious gripes that fairly overpowers and twists them inside out. And really, when it Is all boiled down, the subject over which tbey have been Indulging in such a series of hysterical spasms, has just about as much to do with his executive ability and fitness for the office of president, and about as much to do with the other subjects involved In the political struggle, as tbe narns of the great man s favorite book or the address of the firm that does his laundry work. This however, is merely a single example. Right on down tbe line it Is the same. False premises, false reasoning, specious arguments, vain objections, empty Issues, a mere hurly burly and jumble of words calculated to benumb tbe ear and cloud the reason of the army of "doubtful voters" from which tbey are faintly hoping to be able to gain enough recruits to fill out tbeir ragged ranks and possibly, pos sibly, (who knows?)slide into power by some hook or crook in tbe coming election. A pugilist facing an almost sure defeat, often casts defense to the winds. rushes in blindly and showers blows upon bis antagonist In a faint hope that possibly one of them may Btrike home and turn the tide in his favor. This sign has almost invariably held good in lesser combats, and surely it holds good in struggles of a differ ent nature political contests, for instance, like the one that is even now engaging our attention. . . ---AAayyviSfAMyviajyvairyvMm'.j.. Several of the citizens of Yamhill county, exasperated because Fruit Inspector Lownsdale has ordered diseased fruit trees in all parts of the couuty destroyed and hasenforeed his orders1, petitioned to tbe County Court for his removal, but were refused. which shows that the County Court ut least, If no one else, recognizes and appreciate the fact that Mr. Lowns dale has done more for tbe upbuild ing of the fruit industry In Yamhill county In the last few years than a hundred of tbe ones who are endeav oring to overthrow him could have accomplished. Labor Day was celebrated in Dallas In tbe most appropriate manner po sible by labor In the mills and fac tories, the stores and shops, and the bop yards, when the heavy downpour of rain would cease long enough to make such a method of celebratiou convenient.
