DALLAS, OREGON, 8EITmBE I, IK- 7"A tcay f ufi Dallas u to pat ronize Dallas people. The annual All-L'enton County Fair will be held In Corvallls during the last three days of this week, and is announced as the biggest tbinff of its kind that has erer been celebrated in that city. A large attendance from all adjoining counties is anticipated. The gasoline woodsaw has made its annual re-appearance, and its pene trating buzz is one of the surest pos sible signs that summer is drawing rapidly to its close and that the activ ities of the Fall harvest season, the preparations for the approaching win ter, are about to begin. Eugene V. Debs, socialist candidate for president, addressing an audience of several thousand people at a socialist picnic, at Lemont, near Chi cago yesterday, lairly put the late lamented Dowle In the shade, as far as the variety and volume of his vitu peration was concerned. "For two hours," says a news dispatch, "be hurled broadsides of execratloD against Republicans and Democrats. He declared that the laboring people had neither money nor sense. All of which goes to show that Mr. Debs is nearly as tactful In his methods of handling the labor vote as Messrs. Bryan and Gompers have lately proven themselves. The "biggest cherry tree inOregou," has recently appeared in at least four different counties in as many consocu tiveweeks. First it was Yamhill, then Marlon, then Linn, 'then Wasco, and when it bad completed tbe round the remarkable tree repeated Its perform ance on the same schedule, tuklug In a few now countieson tbe side. Where fore we are convinced that its claim for greatness Is based on a wrong foundation. The people of the coun ties where It has appeared should not lay claim to tbe possession of the "largest cherry tree in Oregon," but should proudly announce to the world that they have received a visit from the "only migratory cherry tree now in captivity." 'Ullk" O'Louglilin, one of America's noted baseball umpires, may Boon have to retire from the diamond. He is suffering from a severe organic stomach trouble, brought on, so the physicians tell biin, by the terrific strain placed on the muscles of the diaphragm in yelliug "Strike tub," and they have warned him that be must stop this. Itenlly tbatexpresslon and Its sequel, "Strike three," seem to have an equally perntclouseflW't upon other patrons of the royal American, for how familiar to tbe eiithiiHiuHtic "fan" is that cold, chill nausea, that ....ll.. It sc-m strauge tbat while In tbe eyes of the "Independent and strictly "non-partisan" Portland Journal, no Bepuhllcao candidate Hppcnia to be more than tbe crude, abortive sem blance of a real statesman even at his very best, the self-same "IiideiH-ndeiit" and strictly "nou-partlsan" paper continues to ''whoop It up" for Bryan and Kern even as It did for George E. Chamberlain and other Democrats before hi tn, picturing them as para gons of perfection, aud the only men upon whom we can possibly rely- to reacue "our tieloved country from lin 'Uillng ruin ami desolation!" Unless wehad had it frtvpienUy announo-d to ut upon their word of honor that they were, la very south, strictly non partisan and Independent, some of us might really be troubled by a haunt ing suspicion that after all the Journal may poaibly have amine1 light Inclinations toward the I Vino- ' cratlo side of the question after all. j II. Two of his ribs were broken, his shoulder crushed, and be sustained several injuries the serious ness of which can not yet be deter mined. Tbe new block of macadam on Con rt street between Main and Church streets is beautifully finished, and preseuts a surface almost as smooth as asphalt. Needless to say the property holders along that block are highly delighted with the appearance of their newly completed street. B. L. Chapman, owner ot one of the largest and most up-to-date prune evaporators in this neighborhood, says that uuless the weather takes a sudden and unfavorable turn within the next week, the prune orchards in this locality will be ready for picking by about September 10. Mrs. Kantuur and little son, the wife and son of Prof. Clifford Kantner, in company with her mothef, Mrs. Whit caker, were down from Independence, the first of the week visiting with Mrs W. B. Carter at Chehalera Center. Mrs. Kantner and Mrs. Carter arc sis ters. Newberg Graphic. Reports from the orchards of the Salem district Indicate that the August drop of Italian prunes has beeu moie extensive and serious this year than ever before and It Is predicted that the yield of this variety of prune in the Wlllamotte valley this year will be about one-balf of the amount esti mated a month ago. This means that the demand for this excellent class of evaporated fruit will be greatly In creased with the ad vance of the season, in the opinion of old and expeilenced prune growers, and that the market quotations of the pust and present will bo, consequently, advanced.
