COURT BOUSE NOTES Items of Interest From the Record in the County Offices Briefly Told. DALLAS, OREGON, AOODBT li, 1908. The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronixt Dallas people. THE WRITING REFORM. News comes from Han Francisco that the vertical system ot writiost has been abandoned and tbe old sneocertaD band adopted in the public schools of that city, lnia Das resulted because of the demands made by business men for a free and easy hand, and one that is legible and shows the individuality of the writer, wbK-h i not true of tho vertical hand. With the change of the system, all children have to be taueht writing all over attain and a writing master has bee era cloyed to visit everv school In tna city and give Instructions. The change Is received with delight by all con cemed. as the vertical system has been given a long trial and found wanting. Oregon ian. A wise step for our sister state and she deserves praise for making the change in a single step instead of try ing to do it gradually. In its effort to get back once more from the vertical to the Spenoerian style, Oregon schools have adopted a mongrel style called the "medial system," which retains the objectionable features of the ver tical system without achieving the merits of the Spenoerian, and which must sooner or later be abandoned for a complete return to the old flowing hand the band that combines speed and legibility with character. The vertical system attains the max imum of legibility, at a sacrifice of speed and ease, and the almost com plete eradication of individuality in hand writing. A signature In the vertical is the easiest thing in the world to forge for the reason that it is not a signature In the true sense of the word, but merely a laborious drawing. The Siencerian system, on the other hand, with its flowing arm movement, reaches the maximum of seed and individuality with a scarcely appreciable loss in legibility. Kvery line is clear, bold and strocgly defined, possessing character that is Inimitable. The handwriting of two persons using the Hpeooerian style may be equal In legibility but oue will never be mis taken for the other, while, vertical writers are turned out like so many table legs, equally round, equally symmetrical, but equally devoid of character, so that the pniers handed In by half n dozen pupils In our public schools often look as though they had all been written by one kihii. It Is Indeed to lie. bojied that the time I not far distant, when the vertical, medial, backhand and all other such pxereBivtioes on tho noble art of chl rograpby, shall have been consigned to the oblivion that they richly deserve, ami the system shall again come into use whereby school children may learn to write with seed and clearness without having to am-rillce the personality which alone makes baodwritlng beautiful.
