William Jennings Bryan goes on record as baring aaid that if elected to the office of President of the United States, be will not be a candidate for re-election. Beally, it see ma, Mr. Bryan might study witb profit that ancient recipe for rabbit stew which begins "First catch your rabbit," and make sure of eren one term before be prepares so rashly to dispose of the second. The season of 1908 bids fair to be quite successful as far as the bop crop is concerned. Tbe vines in nearly all of the yards in this vicinity that are under cultivation are well advanced and the bop growers anticipate a heavy yield. Prices are noticeably advancing and many of the more sanguine growers prophesy 12-cent hops before tbe close of tbe season. Tbe rise In price is partly due to the enormous reduction in the acreage of the Oregon bopyards witbin tbe past year, many of tbe yards being allowed to lie un coltivated and still more beingentirely abandoned, plowed up and diverted to other agricultural uses. L F. Yoakum, one of the prominent hop growers and dealers of Polk county, recently received an offer of a contract price of 10 cents for his entire crop of 1908 bops, but refused it Air. Toakum is confident that the price of hops will rise yet higher this year, anticipating sales at 12 cents or even 15 cents. D03T0RS MISTZUCES tr.uid cftm to be buried stl feet under ground. Tbe first number of tbe Northwest Journal of Engineering, a periodica edited and published by students rep resenting the engineering classes in . tbe Oregon Agricultural College, and devoted to topics of Interest and bene fit In that line of work, reflects great credit upon those- under whose direction it wag produced. It neatly and tastefully gotten up, Is full of well-written and practical Informs tion, and will no doubt rapidly attain the extensive circulation that its mer its deserve, among the people of Ore gon who are Interested in engineering la Its various phases. According to a statement recently complied by Chlof Clerk 8. A. Kozer, In the ofHoe of the Secretary of State, It cost the state something like $15, COO In addition to the regulnr election expenses, not counting the cost of enlarged ballots nor the extra time of tbe Judges and clerks, for the people, of Oregon to vote on tbe Initiative and Referendum bills at the recent June election. Itather a toutnl sum isn't It, for the people of Oregon to pay for the privilege of passing a collection of laws, a fewof which are good, many bad, and more of a very Indifferent nature? At the International marksmanship contest at Ulsley luHt week the Ameri can rlflemon swept all before thorn, establishing higher totals In every contest than the picked riflemen from the best teams that Canada and Europe could produce. Starting with load at the first range the American riflemen were never displaced and at tbe close of tbe contest they had piled up a score or 2553, nearly loo points more than England, their closest com petitor. This was a glorious victory truly, not alone for the comparatively mall body of men who made tip the personnel of the team, but for the great mass of American riflemen, whose efficiency as soldiers in case war should arise, was represented at lant week's rifle meet In Its true and Just ratio with the efficiency of those marksmen who can be put in the field by any of the other Important military powers of the world.
