RINGING THE HOG. It Can Ba Easily Dona by tha Uaa of a Strong Crata. When ringing hogs 1 have found notu - lng better than a good strong crate, writes E. P. Siijder in National Stock man and Farmer. It Is something ev ery farmer who raises hogs needs and baa bad occasion to use several times every year. I have Just ringed two old sows that will weigh 350 pounds each In fair stock condition. Of course they were strong, but after I got them in the crate an easy matter, for I coaxed them in with shelled corn I easily held them with one hand and worked the ringer with the other, and I'm no Bandow either. I use 1 by 6 Inch boards for the crate and use oak for the two top boards, as they bold nails Ijettcr than soft wood. I nail strips across the top for the cover, leaving the spaces six Inches apart so I can easily manipu late a rope till I catch a noose around the upper Jaw; I use a three-eighths inch cotton rope with a small Iron ring brattled in one end, as the noose runs much more free ly through this fine than through a rope. It Is an easy matter to work this noose around the upper Jaw and then draw the snout up through the crate, where it can be easily held by giving It one turn around one of the slats form ing the cover of the crate. All the rest Is easy, and the rings can be Inserted at leisure. I often fatten spring pigs and sell In September or October without ringing at all, and I prefer that way when practicable, for occasionally the rings make bod sores, and consequently the pigs will not do well. In that cane I have sometimes cut thorn out. I'miaHy two rings Inserted nt the upper edge of the nostrils, with none In the center, will effectually prevent rooting and still work no barm to the pig. At some time during the life of an old sow she needs Judicious ringing to Insure a quiet disposition and good behavior. use a disinfectant In Hie water once or twice a week, as bichloride of mer cury, carbolic acid or permanganate of potash. Blcbolride of mercury is probably the most expensive of any of the disinfectants. Aside from this fact, It Is one of the most satisfactory be cause If elves off no odor. Where the interior of the stable Is built of wood it is whitewashed from two to twelve tlmps annually or kept well painted. Land plaster is the most common dis infectant for floors and gutters. Kluked lime is also satisfactory for this pur pose. ' Shavings are most In favor for bedding. The cows are cleaned dally with currycomb and brush. The udder and narts in proximity to it ore either washed and wiped with a clean towel or are wiped with a damp cloth or snonce. In many cases the udder. flanks, etc.. are clipped periodically. Occasionally a dairyman sprays sta bles and cov.s Immediately before milk ing. It Is a common practice to fas ten up the cows after they have been cleaned In such a way that they can- If l j CERTIFIED better and tighter Yt will pack. When you do not use a pipe down the silo, two men should be inside, so as to thoroughly distribute the ensilage, tramping and packing it tight around the edges and keeping the outside high er than the center. Be sure to get the ensilage thoroughly mixed, not letting 'the light stuff be by itself, as It will settle more than the other and leave air spaces. This should not be overlooked to get the best results. If your corn becomes too dry, be sure to wet It down well with water. After your silo is filled, no matter how well It has been tramped down and settled in filling, it will settle un evenly, and unless it Is leveled off and tramped well three or four times after It begins1 to settle there will be con siderable loss of ensilage on top. By carefully leveling the silage every morning for three or four mornings after filling and tramping It thoroughly around the edges and with the wetting on top this loss will be reduced to a minimum. A stream of water as large lead pencil or larger should be constantly run on the blower or carrier. In this way fairly good ensilage can be made of com that for one reason or other has become dry. The more I feed cattle the more 1 am confirmed in my belief the day Is Dot far off when comparatively few cattle that are mora than eighteen months old will be marketed for laughter, writes a Missouri feeder to Orange Judd Fanner. Once I had the Idea that the larger the cattle the greater the profits. In those days we never thought of marketing a steer as fat until be was around four years old. Conditions have changed ma terially. This Is tha age of baby beef. There Is less waste to young steers, and the quality of their beef Is fur lx-t-ter than that from aged stock. I grind all my feed and rush the cattle along until they are about fifteen months old, when I let them go. not lie down till they have been milked. After each cow Is milked the milk is passpd over the cooler and iuto the hand bottling receptacle In the bottling room. One man bottles the milk without asslslnnce and Is able to fill and cap 200' to 300 bottles an hour and place them in the storeroom. In a few dairies the milking Is not done In the regular stable, the cows being taken to a milking room entirely separated from the rest of the barn. This room Is well lighted, and every precaution Is taken to make It abso lutely sanitary. Other dairymen claim that Just as good results cun be se cured by milking in the regular stable if proper precautions arc taken. Some producers of certified ilillk use nothing for sealing the bottles but or dinary pulp caps stamped with the name of the commission and the date. Others use various coverings In addi tion to the ordinary cap. The milk pnlls used In certified milk plants pre sent a great Variety of styles. General ly speaking, they have a small open ing. Some are provided with a strain er, through which the milk passes in entering the pail. This consists In some Instances of several thicknesses of cheesecloth, In others of both cheese cloth and absorbent cotton, and in still others of metal wire. THE DAIRYMAN. A small pasture hundy to t lie dairy barn in which t lie cows may lie al lowed to eat at night during mild weather Is n great help. Much of the feed consumed at ulght does more good than that taken In the day I line. Neat Butter Prints. For private dairying there Is prob ably no better package than the pound priut wrapped In parchment paper. It Is well to have a brand engraved In the print which will leave its Impress upon every pound of good butler sold, but never send any poor butter under this braud, as It would be liable to spoil one'a reputation. All butter prints and butter packages should present a ueat, clean appearance and never be allowed to be smeared with particles of butter or stained with Imprints of dirty fingers. Scours In Calves, If the calf begins scouring, nt once cut down the feed of milk. The pres ence of ax-oura Is the best indication of Indigestion, and Indigestion In the case" of the calf comes most frequently from overfeeding. Keeping a Milk Record. A record of the dally milk yield should alwaya tie kept, not only for the purpose of knowing what each , cow produces, but In order to know , her dally condition and how much feed aha ought to have. The milk sheet will reveal the condition o the cow tpili It er than anything else. As long as she rata well and tha milk yield Increases rapidly the mora feed may h glveu. The place to atop Increasing the feed will be shown by the slow Increase lit milk yield. table Ventilation. If your stable la ventilated only from above you are drawing off the warm air, which means loss to the cows In comfort and loss of tha purest air. Konl air must lie drawn off on a level with the stnbla floor, for bad air Is much heavier than good air. When, the cowa lie down and the ventilation la poor they breathe foul air. It bss Its effect on the cows aa well as on tha product. ems Qood Advice. Here are some good jxilutera from ptMMieroua New York dairyman: Kindness to the cows mys big dlvl dcude st (h ll. Alilute regularity Is one of tha essentials of luimi In dairying. A frrqueut change of diet Is a guod thing, but make change slow ly r you will upeet and deraug the milk flow. Tent tha cowa frequently. "War boarders" have no place to the lightly conducted dairy. Alwsys wipe off udder with a cloth befure nillklug. It Is becoming an almost universal practice to dehorn cattle because they are more easily handled and It pre vents them from Injuring each other. It Is no small task to remove the horns from a mature animal; one even dreads taking them from yearlings and two-year-olds. There is also some danger of animals bleeding to death or get ting poisoned by foreign matter lodg ing In the wounds. It Is therefore let ter to destroy the budding born a few days after the calf Is Imrn. The hair Is clipped off from around this button Mid caustic pntaxh Is applied, says a writers in runners Advocate. J ne stick of potash should be wrapped to protect the Augers, and then moisten one end with water and rub over the button till the skin becomes slightly sure and the calf shows signs of smart ing. The person who applies the pot- isli should be careful not to permit miy of It to run down the calf's fuce or get Into Its eyes, for It will destroy the hair and cause considerable pain If It gets In the eyes. In n few days tt scab will form, which will soon dis appear, and If the work Is properly done no boms will develop. If the button continues to grow the applies tlon enn be repeated. Feed For Next Fall. I Hi not overlook providing plenty of feed for next fall nnd winter. Too fro- liieutly the farmer does not exercise the precaution he should to BKxnre the live stock a liberal supply of the liest feed. I'o not dccnd on a single fed crop, nor on a single planting. Do not figure on barely feed cninigti to winter the (dock figure on having a surplus. N'elllir Is the quantity sll to ls looked after. Consider well the quality. Con sider also well the fact that the stock must U kept growing and in good flesh and vigorous during the winter. You lose money, says Fanners Advocate, when the stock Is not growing every minute. Rules For Swine Breeders. Following are ten rules that should be followed by every intelligent swine breeder: 1. Breed from mature stock. 2. See that they have dry, clean sleeping quarters. 3. See that they are never overfed and no sudden changes made In their feed. 4. See that they have free access to pure water. 5. See that they have good shade during warm weather. (J. See that they are not obliged to eat their feed in filtn or mud or In the dust. 7. Never feed an exclusive corn diet. 8. Do nut inbreed. I). See that tufelr surroundings are kept clean. In warm weather dust fresh lime around any places that are apt to give off a stench. , 10. Keep the following mixture ip a dry place where they can help them selves the year round: One load of ashes, 100 pounds of salt, fifty pounds of sulphur, twenty pounds of copperas. one barrel of lime; mix thoroughly. In ndditiou, feed charcoal and soft coal. Best the World Affords. 'It gives me unbounded pleasure to recommend Buck lens Arnica halve, says J. V. Jenkins, of Chapel Hill, N. C.
