The infant child of Mrs. Ludmilla Gerlinger, aged about four months, is reported to be quite low with an attack of spinal meningitis and grave doubts are entertained .as to its recovery. John Olin returned to Dallas, Mon day evening from a visit with his family in Vancouver. He was accom panied home by his son, Gus, who will visit in this city for a few days. The city council has passed an ordi nance that all cement sidewalks built in the residence districts shall be made five feet four inches In width in future instead of five feet as heretofore. Professor and Mrs. D. M. Metzger spent Saturday in Lafayette. Profes sor Metzger returned to Dallas, Satur day evening and Mrs. Metzger will visit relatives In McMinnville before returning home. City Engineer F. H. Morrison filed bis report on the block of macadam just completed on Main street, at the meeting of the city counoil last night. The total cost of the work was about $1,700, or about $2.12 a front -foot to the center of the street Mr. and Mrs.H. L. Fenton and Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Coad returned yester day from Newport, where they have been preparing to move into their fine summer cottage, which has just been oompleted. They, will return to New port in about two weeks and remain until the first of September. TRAIN SERVICE TO BAY A. J. Roberts has resumed the work of drilling for oil ou the W. C. Brown property north of Dallas, after adelay of several weeks, due to the breaking of a portion of the machinery. The drill has reached a depth of 3(30 feet, and Mr. Roberts will hasten the work as fast as possible in future. Circuit Judge Galloway has post poned his decision in the Indepen dence liquor Injunction case until the middle of the month, but at the advice of Prosecuting Attornev J. H. MoNary, the saloon keepers of that oity have decided to refrain from the sale of liquor until the case is definitely set tled. Charles and Henry Sullivan, of Spokane, were visitors in Dallas over Sunday, after an absence of nearly thirty years. They were the editors and publishers of the Polk County Republican, which-afterward became the Itemizer, for several years, and both are well remembered by the older residents of this city. . . The report that had been clrcufated to the effect-that S. P. Kimball's fine country house In Polk county near Salem was destroyed by fire, proved to be incorrect. The flames that were seen from Salem and, appeared to be in the exact location of the big build ing, were caused by a big bonfire that had been built in celebration of the Fourth of July.
