SUGGESTIONS FOR DAIRYMEN. In a pamphlet recently Issued by the dairy division of tbe department of agriculture at Washington, entitled "Twenty Dairy Suggestions, With Spe cial Reference to Sanitation," tbe fol lowing direction are given relative to the proper care of tbe dairy herd. Tbey are much to tbe point and should be posted op In every cow stable In the land: (1) Have the herd examined at least twice a year by a skilled veteri narian, promptly removing any ani mals suspected of being in bad bealtli. Never add an animal to tbe herd un less certain it Is free from disease, par ticularly tuberculosis. (2) Never allow a cow to be excited by fast driving, abuse, loud talking or unnecessary dis turbance. Do not expose ber to cold or storms more than necessary. 13) Clean tbe entire body of the cow dally, while hair In the region of the udder should be kept short by clipping. (4 Do not allow any strong flavored food like garlic, cabbage or turnips to be eaten except Immediately after milking. Changes In food should be made grad ually. (5i Provide pure fresh water In abundance, easy of access, but not too cold. Under tbe head of milking and handling of tbe milk the following Sug gestions are made: (1) Use no dry. dusty food just previous to milking. (2) Tbe milker should wash bis hands before milking and also see that the udder of tbe cow and surrounding parts are wiped with a clean damp cloth before be begins operations. (3) In milking be should be quiet, qulcky. clean and thorough, commencing his milking at tbe same hour every morn ing and evening and milking the cows In the same order. (4) Tbe milk should be carried to tbe milk room as fast as it accumulates and strained through cotton cloth and cooled at once to 50 degrees F. Warm milk should never be mixed with that which has already been cooled. Being behindhand Is inpre largely a matter of mere habit than necessity, being ' much more easily encouraged than discouraged when once formed. With many It Is to quite an extent re sponsible for the fact that tliey never get ahead in the world. One beauty about a good system of tiling Is the fact that, whl'j It makes the land through whlcb It iRis arable In a wet season, It does not dry It out too much in a dry season, as a mallow condition of soil prevails that tends to prevent n baking of the surface. The children lu the home enjoy a balanced ration as well as do' the ani mals In the feed lot or stable. Such a ration Is pork and beans, boiled pota toes and brown bread, poached egg on toast, good graham bread and Jersey milk; roast pork, dressing ami baked potatoes and apple sauce: roast beef, mashed potatoes and pie. The difference in the value of seed corn that will produce a yield of twen-ty-flve bushels of corn per acre and that which wllf yield fifty bushels with no additional effort except that Involved In busking is JS7.50. this on tbe assumption that tbe twenty-five extra bushels of corn are worth $12.50 and that one bushel of corn will plant seven acres. This Is a very easy conclusion to arrive at and one that every farmer should figure out with a lead pencil before he puts bis corn Into the ground this spring. WHY WOMEN SUFFER Little Sound Advice Will Help Many a Sufferer in Dallas. An even and tractable clisxvltion in a horse Is often fspoileJ by improper handling and tnilniiiz. as is often the case Willi the strunir wtlle.l and wide awake boy or girl. The very qualities which make the child or burse most useful antl valuable If pr.erly trained make them the more difficult t man- age If they are not properly bundled iu I tbe early stages. j Every young woman who contem plates presiding over a home of her own should know bow to cook well, to do plain sewing and understand tbe essentl.il principles Involved in an eco nomical and Intelligent management of her household. If in addition to these acquisitions she cau play, sing, paint or draw she is just so much the better endowed. Theaverage husband, whose heart is so often most effectively ap pealed to through bis stomach, has dif ficulty in reconciling a soggy mesa of biscuits or an India rubber with a finely executed musical classic from Wagner or an aesthetic borne wrought panel of daisies or pansies. Tbe wife of the famous musician i Padcrcwski has within the past month purchased four single combed White Orpingtons, for which he paid the enormous sum of JT.utXI. It was a ben of this same strain that scored ninety-seven points at the Jamestown exposition, being valued by ber owners t 12,500. Tbete men certainly need no argument to prove that It pays to raise pure bred poultry. RENT OR BUY The above query is one that often confronts young people as they start housekeeping on their own account and they are often perplexed to know which la tbe wiser and more econom ical course to pursue. While circum stances to be found In some portions of larger cities may make the plan of owning a borne of one's own Inadvisa ble, It seems to be the consensus of opinion that under average conditions those who buy are at the end of a term of years financially ahead of what they would have been had they rented a property of an equal value. Added to the fact that la a period of twelve years one would pay out In rent con siderably7 more than the plu.'e rented could be bought for at tlie beginning of the period Is the satisfaction of having a homo of one's own, n consid eration that it is not easy to measure In dollars and cents. Moreover, where young people buy a home of their own and have to go In debt for It there is constantly present an Incentive to be economical nndeurerul In one's expend iture. Thus the putting of money into a home results In much the sumo conditions that prevail when one Is carrying llfo Insurance or putting money Into other forms of Investment. Payments must be made at stated In tervals, and economy Is accordingly practiced that theso may be met. Where one rents a portion of the sala ry is devoted to this purpose, but the process goes on year ufter year with nothing to show for tbe money one has paid during the Interval but a bunch of receipts for rent which have no ne gotiable value. There Is a type of folks that are as tender hearted as cau be In their re Intions to and treatment of dumb ani mals who are seemingly calloused when It comes to hurting the feelings of their own folks or circulating a false report which may besmirch the good name of a neighbor or acquaintance, The first named trait is a most com mendable one, but should not be di vorced from tlie higher type of benevolence. A recent government bulletin on crop production In European countries states that the average crop obtained from au acre of potatoes In (Jermany Is $10 and from an acre of sugar beets $55, while wheat yields $20 and rye but $21 per acre. In France the acre value of bops reaches $153, of tobacco $03 and of sugar beets $47 ugalust only $21 for wheat. In the Netherlands the gross return per acre of wheat, $20, is surpassed by the returns from tobacco, $213, potatoes $74 and sugar beets $52. In the face of the great scarcity of help in many of the rural sections of the country the girls and women in the home are frequently of necessity culled upon to help out ot busy seasons of the year. While this is perfectly proper, provided they liavo the time to spnro and while the outdoor exercise they would get would undoubtedly be bene ficial, it Is well to favor the young and Immature girl and not Impose upon her tasks that are beyond ber strength. Often an Injury Is done the child un wittingly that nmy remain for years. The fact that the girl may be ready and willing to help should be taken as a reason for extra precaution. In many states health laws Impose a severe peualtj for the selling of milk, cream or butter from cows which are known to be afflicted with tuberculosis. In states where no such laws exist the creamery manager and the Individual dairymen should exercise every possi ble precaution with a view to locating and weeding out animals that may be sickly, and especially those that show symptoms of being afflicted with this disease. The use of tbe milk from such animals Is a source of danger not only to the members of the family, but to all who partake of It. In such cases a state law ought not to be required to make one follow a course that would seem to be dictated by good horse sense. While tobacco growers the country over are pestered with Insect enemies that work more or less damage to their crops, tbe worst parasite which some of the growers Id portions of Kentucky have to put up with Is a two legged microbe that wears a mask, carries a revolver and makes a practice of set ting the grower's tobacco storehouse afire and perhaps killing the owner. So destructive have the attacks of these Night Riders been during theimst year that many of the Independent tobacco growers of the state referred to have bad to vacate their plantations and move to other states. The motive for these vicious attacks on the Indcpcml ents seems to be traceable to thylr un willingness to have the price at whl tbey shall sell their product dictated by the Tobacco Growers' association, through which as a result of a mutual agreement the members have been able to raise the price of tobacco from 8 to 13 cents a pound. Tlie ludepend ents, not liking dictation as to the management of their business and many of them having Insnltlcieut means to enable them to bold their product for a considerable crlod of time, have sold or offered to sell at lower prices thso those set by the as soclutlon. with the results as stated above. In the vicinity where the writer lives representatives of a foreign grocery house canvassed for supplies, and a bill of goods which one of their customers bought, which was later put on exhibi tion, contained several eye openers. One of those was the fact that the un suspecting buyer had paid 08 cents per pound for a cheap tea that wag not worth a cent more than 30. The same order Included thirty pounds of soda t about the same price that It would ell for ot the local grocery store, but there was enough of It to last for four or live years. The same bill of goods which the peddler asked $-11 for could have been bought on tick at the local grocery for $.12. and for $27.50 If cash had been paid, as It was to the peddler. The experience which these buyers bad would seem to suggest the wisdom of nt least giving the home merchant an rfpportunlty to bid on a bill of goods before It Is given to the representative ot tlie foreign house.
