Polk County Observer J. C. HAYTER, EDITOR AND l'UlilAtillir.K. Published Semi-Weekly at 11.60 per Year. Strictly in Adranc. Entered aa second -class matter March 1, 1W7, at the post ottlc at Kallas, Orefon, under the Act of Congress ol March 3, im. DALLAS, OREGON, Jt'CI It. 108. The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. Twenty per cent discoUDt on lace curtains at Guy Bros. & Daltoo's Mrs. Josie Brlnkley, of Portlaod, is visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. D. A. Madison. - Mrs. Lizzie Percival, of Madras, Or., who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Ella Davis Craig, at 420 East Grant, underwent a surgical operation at the North Pacific Sanitarium yesterday and although reported very low, she has a slight cbanceof recovery. Tues day's Oregonian. A. W. Palmer has filed with the city council a new list of the sums sub scribed by the business men of Dallas toward the payment of a night watch man's salary. The entire subscription amounts to about Hi, and Mr. Palmer desires thecity to give enough to make the salary equal to that paid to the former watchman. The council will make definite decision at their next meeting. BOOST FOR THE FAIR. Now that Dallas has definitely de cided to hold the Free 8treet Fair, it is the duty of every citizen to do all io hla power to make the affair success ful and creditable to the city. The finance committee has already raised a neat sum for the three days' enter tainment, but more money is needed to secure desired attractions, and it is hoped that the business firms and citl zens who have not yet been called up on will give liberally of their mean to enable the management to carry out the program as originally planned A most worthy feature of the proposed entertainment is the annual Pioneer Reunion, which will be held on Thurs day, June 25. It Is the desire of the committee to make this reunion the most successful of any ever held in Polk county and to spare no effort to give the honored guests a day of pleasure that they will long remember. It is proposed to make the noon banquet even more elaborate, if pos eible, than the feast of last year, and the committee feels assured that many people who have not been called upon to contribute money will be glad to donate eatables and flowers for the tables. Remember that every cent of money subscribed by Dullas people will bo used in providing free enter talnment for the three days, such as baseball, braBs bunds, sports and games, street illuminations, pioneer banquet, etc. Mr. Arnold will bring his tent shows and merry-go- rounds to Dullas for the occasion, but will ask nothing from the city further than the use of a portion of one of the streets. Instead of asking for money, Mr. Arnold has kindly volunteered to furnish free of charge three of the greatest outdoor attractions each day the balloon ascension, tho high-wire performance, and tho thrilling slide from the courthouse, tower. The var ious committees are making excollout progress with their work, and are cheerfully doing their part toward making the alTalr successful. Let everyone boost for the big free street fair, and when the boys come around for your donation, give what you can afford and send thorn on their way rejoicing. County Judge E. F. Coad and Com missioners J. B. Teal and William Itiddell were at Perrydalo today, In specting the extensive brldgu and high way Improvements that are being made near that place. An effort is being made to secure the sword and pistols that ouco be longed to General Nesmlth, for dis play In Dallas during the big Pioneer Plonio, Thursday, June 25. These weapons are now In the possession of the Oregon Historical Society In Port land. The cement covering which must be built over the mill raw where it, crosses Main street before that block can be macadamized, will bo put In by the city at onoe, so that work can bo cun inenoad at that plana a soon as the main business block along the Court bouse square Is Mulshed. The funeral ofO. W. Lloyd, who died In Falls City last Thursday, was held at hla residence Friday afternoon. Mr. Lloyd was about 02 years old at thti lline of his deal h, and had been a resident of Falls City for nearly 30 years. He Is survived by two daugh tern, both residing In California. noyu aiyer, who has made a most enviable record for himself In the Willamette Valley as baseball pitcher during the past five years. recently received a very flattering offer from the manager of the baseball team of Halt Lake City. He Is now pitching for the Kalora baseball team, and says that he will probably remain In Ore goo during the present season. BUSINESS LOCALS. Dallas, Orve'on S W :T. tWfaa. as Where did you go so early this morning, Mrs. Wise? I was down to HALL & HAYES to get one of those Silk Floss Mattresses they make. They are strictly all floss and each bed guaranteed, and they have the most complete line of Carpets, Rugs, Matting, Lace Curtains, etc. in the city. And say, those Couches they make are just simply grand. And they said they would not be beat on prices. HALL & HAYES Successors to F. J. Chapman, Electricity for Lighting Is only expensive to people who are wasteful and careless. To you, who are naturally careful, it does not come high. It Is economical because it can be quickly turned off wnen not needed. With gas or kerosene there is the temptation to let liRht burn when not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month. You can probably get 6ome kind of artificial light for less money than electric light, but does it save you anything when it limits op portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes your walls mars decorations and increases household work. You could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your meals but it wouldn t be economy. It is not so much what you save, but how you Bave that counts. WILLAMETTE VALLEY CO.
