Whiteaker, a prominent farmer residing about four miles east of this city, was in Dallas yesterday on business. He says that the work of drilling for oil on bis property Is being carried forward rapidly, and that It is only a matter of a short time until a paying flow of oil will be struck. The drill has reached a depth of only 300 feet, but already a slight, but steadily increasing flow of petroleum has been observed. -Indications are becoming daily more favorable, and it Is thought that only a little deeper, the drill will strike the main body of oil and set It free In a paying flow. The drill has passed through two strata of hard granite rock since the work commenced and has pierced three deposits of coal, one of which was fully three feet in thickness and of an excellent quality. To The Voters of Polk County. Gentlemen : ' I am a candidate for election to the office of County Treasurer. A position of the greatest financial responsibility within your gift. As many of you do not know me personally, before asking you for your support, it is but just and proper that you should know some thing of the person seeking this posi tion. Flease permit me to offer the following personal sketch : I was born In Folk county C2 years ago; brought up on a farm; gradu ated from Willamette University in 1878 ; read law $wo years, but was com pelled, on account of failing health, to leave the, office ; came back to Polk county and bought a farm on credit, and after fifteen years of Industry and economy, paid for it. I then came to Dallas where I have slnced lived. 1 was elected to the office of City Auditor and Police Judge for twelve years consecutively, which Is evidence of my ability as a book keeper and expert accountant. Although seriously handicapped by physical disability sinoe boyhood, I am not asking your support, out of sympathy on that account- The custody of your funds is purely a business proposition and sympathy should cut no more figure here than In the selection of your banker, as that Is what the office really amounts to In the end. Our county Is now practically on a cash basis, and our taxes, , (about $150,000 annually) are mostly collected in the spring and remain in tbe Treasurer's bands until 'paid out on warrant in the regular course of busi ness, and I feel that I am qualified, from business experience, educational attainments and. past financial integ rity, to care for these funds to the satisfaction of the taxpayers of the county. I therefore respectfully ask you to consider my qualifications for this position, and if, in oasting your vote, you will use tbe same business judgment that you use in your private business, I shall be satisfied. My platform Is : The oath of office strictly interpreted and faithfully observed. Thanking you for any favors you may show me, I am Yours respectfully, DAN P. 8TOUFFER. My name on the ballot ia numbered 45. Edd C. Dunn will serve the people faithfully, if eleeted County Trca urer. , . Jack Morrison, of F.ock, Creek, was in Dallas this week and completed arrangements so that the men living In that precinct might be.permltted to vote in the coming election. Only two voters In that precinct had registered when the books were closed, and It was thought that no election could be held. It was found, however, that Mr. Morrison, as a registered voter, might be -chosen judge of election In that precinct, and would have power to swear in those who did not register. There will be about ten votes cast In that precinct. The Observes office wants the print ing you are particular about. Dr.Donohoe, Dentist CglowBldg Boom 1. Mutual Phone 256.
