The work of excavating and grading In preparation for macadamizing the block on Main street between Oak and Academy, Is being carried forward as rapidly as possible, a large crew of men and several teams beln g employed in the work. The grade on that block Is considerably lower than It is on the same street in the business portion, and it will be raised to a uniform level before the macadam is laid. The pro cess of raising the grade will make it necessary to do considerable grading work on the hill .at Academy street, and it may take longer to get the street thoroughly prepared for maoadamiz ing than was at first expected. One of the planks of the Republican state platform Is as follows : We are opposed to the abuse of the Initiative ana referendum by tjie sub mission to the people of large num bers of measures on the same ballot The people are too busy to give these measures the attention necessary to insure wise action. The number of measures to be submitted at any one election should be limited and it should be further provided that a measure once voted down by tne people should be ineligible to a place on the ballot for a period of six years thereafter. The latter part of this plank is clearly directed against woman suf frage. This proposition was thor oughly canvassed two years ago and was defeated by a majority of 10,173 There has been no change in publio opinion on this question and the Immi gration into the state has been chiefly of those opposed to this amendment, Nevertheless it is again foisted on the ballot under the misleading title of "Equal Suffrage" in the hope that through the inattention of the voters and the carelessness which will follow from the large number of propositions submitted, this measure may slip through. The convention is right This is an abuse of the initiative. The amendment ought to be defeated by a larger majority than that of two years ago. Oregon "Guilty" as charged in the Indict ment" was the verdict reached by the jury in the Hembree murder case last night, after four and one-half hours' deliberation. Five ballots were taken before a verdict was agreed upon. ' The arguments of counsel occupied all of yesterday, and the jury retired at 6 o'clock p. m after receiving the instructions of Judge Burnett At 10:30 o'clock, they notified the Court that they had agreed upon a verdict A few minutes later Sheriff Grant brought the prisoner into the court? room and the verdict was formally announced., Hembree did not exhibit the least sign of nervousness, and maintained the same stolid indiffer ence he has shown throughout the trial while the jury was being polled. Owing to the lateness of the hour, only a few spectators were present Judge Burnett set Wednesday, June 24, as the date for passing sentence on the prisoner. Hembree was convicted by the Polk county jury for the murder of his daughter at Sand Lake, Tillamook county. Something like two years ago the family dwelling was myster iously burned late at night and the wife and daughter lost their lives, Hembree alone escaping. Circum stances connected with the fire and Hembree's peculiar actions aroused the suspicions of the neighbors that he had murdered' the two women, and he was taken Into custody. The find of the headless bodies In the ruins, of the dwelling and two skulls, in an old heating stove lent color to the murder theory. Hembree was tried before a Tillamook county jury on a charge of killing his wife and was found guilty of manslaughter. He was given an Indeterminate sentence in the penitentiary, and, after serving a few months, was paroled by Gover nor Chamberlain. His season of liberty was destined to be short, however, for he had no sooner returned to Tillamook county than he was arrested for the murder of his daughter. Alleging that feel ing In Tillamook was so strong against him that he would be unable to obtain a fair trial, he was granted a change of venue and the case was sent to Polk county. Hembree was defended by Attorneys McCain & Vinton, of McMinnville, and M. L. Pipes, of Portland. The State was represented by District Attorney John H. McNary. The con victed man is about 65 years old, and is a native of Yamhill county. J SPRING OPPOR TUNITIES WISE TALKS BY U. S.
