." SHORTHORN" SPLENDOR." " BrssaVa Hound Out a Great Year en Both Slaws of the Atlantic A progreaaJre policy ta being pursued by the American Shorthorn Breeders' association to procure the extension of tha market for oar Shorthorn cattle. Last fall, it will be remembered, tlx fleers of the society undertook a per sonally conducted exportation of bulla and heifers into Mexico, and, while the financial results showed little or o gain, fine lot of cattle were sold to Influential breeders, whose example la purchasing will doubtless be follow ed by others. Dnrtng the trip it waa borne in on the officials that if the effort should be followed op intelligently many more Bhortborna could be sold sooth of the Bio Grande, and to that end arrange ments nave been completed for the proper representation of the trade. L. Vlliareal Madera, Ban Antonio, Tex, bas been appointed agent of the asso ciation and has been conducting nego tiations with the Mexican officials. It Is made plain that the officials of the American Shorthorn association made a most excellent more when tbey Inraded Mexico with a lot of Short horn cattle. They have secured the active co-operation of the Mexican de-j partment of agriculture and also of i tha rations state departments, which most in time succeed in opening up fruitful demand for our cattle. It work of this kind that counts. At 8mithfild. Short born breeders bare rounded oat great year on both sides of the At Untie. The bogs in win ter are penned on about four acres of clorer sod. During the winter tbe soil of this pen or lot becomes more or less paddled end is rather difficult to bring into condition for a good seed bed in spring. This can be accom plished, bowerer, by continued stirring and clod crushing. But this takes time and necessitates late planting. Here was a need for a crop that could be planted in late spring or early summer snd yet fit into tbe general farm scheme. Several crops were tried, and soy beans proved most to tbe owner's satisfaction. Ths Grain Ration. A light grain ration is not the most economical for growing pigs unless un der peculiar circumstances, when al falfa is abundant, grain very nigh in price and market conditions warrant holding the hogs. It seems probable that two or more pounds of corn daily tier each hundredweight of hogs is more profitable than a lighter ration. Tbe cost of gain is not a reliable cri terion of profit. A cheap gain may be so stow ss to be unprofitable. Time, labor and investment should be con sidered when reckoning profits. A full grain ration, though making tbe gain more costly, usually gives greater prof its because of tbe larger amount of business transacted in a given time with a given number of bogs. A commission of seven expert pa thologists not members of tbe depart ment of agriculture was up pointed dur ing the year to advise regarding thane portions of tbe meat regulations wblcb deal with tbe disposal of diseased car fosses. According to Secretary Wilson's report, the general conclusion of the commission waa that "if there be any general error In tbe regulations this la in favor of tbe public rather than la favor of the bu tellers and packers." SWINE RAISER. Tha practice wblcb led to tbe Intro duction of soy beans Into tbe cropping system of a very successful Illinois farm which Is' devoted wholly to bog Ahen It Imparts a Bad Odor or Flavor to ths Milk, The following observations on tbe effect of feeding silage to dairy cows have been published ly W. J. Fraser of the. Illinois experiment station, wbo said: Tbe dairy herd was divided into two lots, one of which was fed forty pounds of corn silage per cow daily, while the other lot was fed only clover hay and grain. The milk from each lot was standardized to 4 per cent and otherwise cared for in exactly tbe same manner. Samples from each lot during tbe course of the experlmenta were submitted to 372 persons for an opln Ion as to any difference In tbe flavor of tbe two samples, anything objection able about eltber and any preference, Tbe results showed that CO per cent preferred silage milk, 29 per cent non silage milk, and 11 per cent had no choice. When tbe silage was fed at tbe time of milking, tbe percentage In favor of silage milk was much higher than when the silage was fed one hour before milking or after milking. Five samples of each lot were sent to inlJk experts in different cities, three of whom preferred silage mUk, one non silage, and one bad no choice. No complaint was received from a bote! to wblcb silage milk was delivered for a period of one month. On the whole. It waa apparent that the greater num ber of people were able to distinguish between the two kinds of milk, but found nothing objectionable about ei ther kind. If of Good Quality. CHABIXS C KOTT, CAirf Jaatloa, -2, Li WHENCE WELDO.X, The abon refers to WEBSTER'S INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY Grove will have a fruit APPLE CULTURE. In al Keeping Quality of Fruit Grown Sod or Under Tillags. Here Is a question, often asked fruit growers' meetings, as answered in part bj H. W. C. In Bural New Yorker: "Is it true that apples grown In sod bare better keeping quality than those grown under tillage?" No one seems to say yes or no with out qualification. My own experience Indicates tbat the cultivated apples are larger, lighter In color and less firm than those grown In sod. My sod fruit will certainly average smaller and con slderably higher In color. Our only keeping test Is tbat of putting all to gether in an ordinary cellar, as we sell most of our fruit early. From this test I feel sure tbat tbe sod apples are better keepers. In commercial apple culture this does not make so much difference, as most apples are put at once Into cold storage and kept there until sold. 8eintifie Experiments. A large number of scientific ex perl ments have been conducted with vary' Ing results. There Is a certain definite time beyond which apples should not be in storage. After this period the sod fruit keeps best Tbe sod fruit matures earlier than the cultivated nd lr picked at tbe same time Is a little higher colored. This bigb colored matured fruit of course keeps better than immature fruit, especially wltb the earlier varieties, like Wealthy. Alexander and Famcuse. These vari eties undoubtedly keep better when grown on sod land than fruit from tilled land picked at tbe same time. Where the latter was allowed to grow longer there Is not much difference. In commercial orcharding I think more depends on other things, such as pick lug and handling. No matter bow tbe pple is grown, bruising and rough handling will hurt tbe fruit Cottage dryer.
