Polk County Observer J. O. HAYTER, EDITOR ANO I'LTBLISIIKR. Fnbllfhed geml-Weelclr at 1.60 per Year. Strictly In Advance. Entered as second-clasa matter March 1, 1907. at the pott office at Pallas, Oregon, under the Act of Congress ol March 8, 1879. DALLAS, OKEOON, AFHII.3, 1908. The way to build up Dallas it to pat ronize Dallas people. DEATH AND DISASTER. The awful accident which occurred at the Dallas car shops Weda-ssday afternoon, In which one jow-g rcaa ' lost his life and another iu rear! ; ft cripple for the remainder of his i-iys. j has cast a gloom over the entire; community. The victims of the d'.mter were brothers honest, indcuKrioia German boys, whose ambiuxt to attain the highest possible success in tfeeir chosen occupations bad led them to bid farewell to the Fatherland and seek homes and employment in a country of greater opportunity. Arriving In the United States, they were, by fortunate circumstances, enabled to engage at onoe in the line of work they had chosen to pursue. August Gerlinger was given a position as locomotive engineer on his uncle's railroad between Dallas and Falls City, and his brother, Carl, was made master mechanic and plaoed la charge of the extensive machine shops of the com pany. Thus fortunately situated, the young men had built new homes and had settled down to work, happy In the thought that they had at last found the long-sought opportunity for pur suing their chosen occupations, pro viding a comfortable living for the wives and little onos, and, perhaps, laying by a competence for old age. Life was at Its brightest when the blow foil that loft one family futher less and transformed the protector and supporter of another from a strong, energetic man to a bolplosg cripple. Accidents acoompanled by loss of life or limb are distressing under any circumstances, but there is always a peculiar element of sadness la cases where the victims are working mon. engaged In their dally toil. Such disasters doprlve the world of Its most useful citizens, and, as a rule, full up on lamines most In nood of support ana protection. This truth has been brought home to the people of Dallas with emphasis by Wednesday's dls. aster, and has awakened the tondorest sympathy in every breast for the stir vivor or the accident and for the sorrowing family and relatives of the victims. AMERICA'S SHAME. BV PEAS COLLINS. "It needs must till our hearts with shame," Bays Itouterdahl, says he, "To note the mass of junk we've got A-sailingon the sea. We think it is a navy Deluded is our think ; By careful research I have found That it is on the blink." "I claim thatl am qualified To pass mv judgment plain On all the ships that we have got A-sainng on tne main, Since I for many years have drawn, With pencil bold and true. Pictures of ships for 'Colliers,' And for Harper's Weekly, too." "I've drawn the airy pinnace, I've drawn the fishing craft' I've sketched the clumsy dory. And also sketched the raft; The xebec and the brigantine. The schooner and canoe. The warship and the pleasure yacht, And eke the big bateau.
