IW, at the poat office at Utilltta, Oree-on, under the Act of Couarea. ol March 3, 189. DALLAS, ORKOON, March 13, 1908. The way to build up Dallas it to pat ronize Dallas people. MORE MONEY NEEDED. H. O. Campbell, secretary and treas urer of tbe Dullas Canning Company, has been traveling among the various canning plants In tlie Willamette Val ley during the past two or three weeks Id company with O. W. Myer, the president of the company, and in tbo course of these journeys they have secured much practical and valuable information concerning the manage ment of the canning business, which will no doubt be of interest to all stock holders In the newly formed company, and to the general public as well. At the meeting of the stockholders, held In Dallas on February 25, Messrs. Myer and Campbell were Instructed to visit tbe more important canneries In the Willamette Valley, and to secure as much information about the busi ness as possible, for tbe guidunco of the directors In the Dallas company in matters connected with the establish ing of a canning plant In this city. On the following Monday they paid their Hrst visit to the cannery in Hprlngbrook. Mr. Klncaid, the manager and one of the principal stockholders in the Bprlngbrook company received them Id a very courteous and obliging man ner, and took pains to render them all the assistance Id bis power during their visit. Tho main cannery In Bprlngbrook Is a substantial building I 60 reel wide, by 90 feet long, and has two large sheds with solid foundations connected to It, for use a a store room for the finished product of the factory. This plant, lueludltig building, machinery and grounds, was estab lished at a cost of about $7000, ami has a oapnclty of from 60(W to 7u00 cutis per day. From Hprlngbrook, Mr. Myer and air. uampocll went to Newberg and lnsjctod the large cunning factory that Is now In the proceHs of Insinua tion la that city. It will bo ono of the largost on tho coast when completed. Tho main cannery bull. ling h Km f,.et wldo and 810 foot la length, with a driveway for wugonsexteudlng the full length of the bulldlngoti one side, and with a side rack of equal length on the inner Biuo, a ooner House () by BO fivt will also bo connected with the muln bulldiug. The entire cost of Installing this big plant will be more than flfi.UOO, tho cost of the buildings alone being Jliooo. The machinery Is not yet Instulled but is expected to be oo bund In time for tho coming sea son's run. On last Friday, Mr. Myer and Mr. Campbell went to Itiownsvllle, where the much-tulked-uf cannery Is in oper ation, iuoy weroespeclully Interested in this plant, as tho Dallas company is not la a position to spend much money on the establishment of its pro posed cannery, and hud hoed to be able to install one similar to the Brownsville cannery, should this appear practicable to them. Arrlvlugln llrownsville, Mr. Myer nd Mr. Campliell were very kindly reoelvod by Ed. Hollowell, the manager of tbe local company, who conducted them personally through thebuflding anu toon pains to glvo them all the Information they deidred concern In a .1- - . . . . me worn or me factory. The lirownsvllle cannery has bvo In operation Just one season. It wus originally established In H vacant building near the rullroHd. and equlped with machinery at a cost of bout :M). iVforo the completion of me ilrst season s run, the company found that the building wus not Ht all adapted to their work, and that the erection of an up-to-date cannery Dunning wouhi ue absolutely neoee sary. a new building 5o feet wide nd 130 feet long Is now In process of building, and will be ready for use by ine opening or the neit season. The old building is so crowded now that a person ran scarcely go through It. Mr. Hollowell says that the old vats, trays, and considerable portion of tbe machinery will I discarded this eaaon and replace! by modern can ning machinery. The real coat of the cannery in Brownsville will therefore amouDt to more ihan $7000, and the manager of the plant declares that the money expended on the cheap machin ery and the old building used last year was worse than wasted. He earnestly advised the visitors from Dallas not to make the mistake of thinking that they could Install a really effective canning plant cheaply, for such od effort would undoubtedly prove far more expensive in the end thaD if they started out with a sufficient sum to put in a really up-to-date and effective factory. Convinced by the facts that they have encountered Id their visits to the neighboring towns, that it would b. folly to attempt to establish a canning plant in this city without raising a greater amount of money than they have hitherto secured, the stockholders have culled a meeting for Monday, March 10, at 2 o'clock p. m , for the purpose of discussing the question, and arriving at a definite plan of action if possible. At this meeting the matter of increasing the capitalization of the company will be discussed, and many other subjects of general Inter est to those who are working for the establishmeutof the cunning industry in Dallus, will be introduced before the assembly. A mooting will bo held at the Court House, Thursday evening, March 19, Tor the purpose of organizing a com pany of militia In this city. All of the men of Dullas are Invited to be present whether they intend to enlist In the proposed company or not as the matter Is one of Importance to every loyal citizen. No expense is attached to an organization of this kind, as far us the city and tho enlisted dicd are concerned, sinco the state will furnish the building for drilling and tho United (States will furnish arms, uni forms, and other equipments. This means that Dallas can havea building tor use us un armory, built and main talncd by the state, or rented from some private party who may have suitable building, at no cost whutover to tho city of Dallas ItHelf.
