repealed. Dodging the law and
evading such of Its provisions as are
aooeptable will accomplish nothing.
The way to get rid of an unpopular
law is to enforce It. Four years ago,
no powor on earth could have defeated
the direct primary measure. Two
years later, it would have carried by a
greatly reduced vote. Today it is less
popular than ever, and It is safe to
ay that If It Is noteventuully repealed
altogothcr It will at IcbbI be modified
and amondud lu many Important

Displteall argument to the contrary,
mo uiiKKitVKR believes that the Intent

The vote at the primaries would Indi
cate the party voter's choice, and
farther voting at alio polls lu Juno
would be unnecessary. The Intentof
the law Is clear, and it Is a sad reflec
tion upon any voter's Intelligence
when he claims that he did not under

The Oimkrveb has often been asked
why It Is willing toBuphortcniidldutes
wno lavor statement No. 1, when it has
ii aiong opposed the primary law.
"1B ry simple reason that wo do
not lake the dlioot pdmary uw as a
teat or any man's lCepubllcanlaiii. We
would not make a caudl.lato's position
on that question a test of his fitness
to represent Tolk county In the Ore

other Interests besides nnim... I
take, as we bave had forcibly
Impressed upon us a few times In the
past when represented by weaklings
and misfits who had lieen sent t.i

roasters. The Ouskhvm wants to see
atroog men sent to represent polk
oounty, and It don't care a darn
whether they are for Statement No. i,

long at they are honest, capable,
Intelligent Itepuhlleans. That's the
