DALLAS DEFEATS NEWBERG
Local Skatinjr Team Wins Basketball
Game by Decisive Score of
30 to 13.
The Dallas skating team once more
demonstrated its superiority over the
Newberg team, defeating that aggre
gation in a game of basketball on the
Newberg floor Saturday night, by a
scoreof 30 to 13.
The game was fast and clean, but
the Dallas team easily surpassed its
opponents in speed and team work,
while its goal throwing was almost
faultless. Individually, the members
of the Dallas five showed themselves
to be better skaters, and more at home
on the rollers than the members of
the Newberg team.
Higgins, the Newberg center, played
the star game for his team, scoring 6
out of the 13 points. Elder, of Dallas,
threw 6 baskets from the field and two
from the foul line, Brown and Simon
ton threw four each, and Magers one.
The line-up was the same in Satur
day nignt's game as in the game
played in Dallas, January 24, with the
exception that Phelps played guard
for the Dallas team until the latter
part of the second half, when he was
replaced by Magers. Bert Teats acted
as referee. Those who accompanied
the team in the capacity of "rooters"
were Frank Kerslake, Leif Finsetb,
Harry Madison and Merwin Boyer.
E. M. Young, one of the best known
hop buyers in the state, is again
engaged in the business, being back

ter. He has been in Dallas several
days this week in the interest of his
firm.

ity of his recovery have been enter
tained. Since last night, however, a
marked improvement in his condition
has been noted.

mouth skating rink, will give a grand
masked skating carnival next Satur
day night, February 22, and expects

entertainment of that kind that has
ever been given in Monmouth.
The depot at Newberg was entered
Friday night, and an effort was made
to open the safe by the use of dyna
mite. The explosive was put on the
dial of the safe, but instead of blowing
inward, it acted in the opposite man
ner, shattering all the windows in the
front of the building. The safe was
but slightly Injured, and the would-be
burglars secured practically nothing.
Conductor Crocker, of the afternoon
train between Dallas and Portland,
says that similar attempts have been
made at several previous times.
