The foregoing paragraph is from the pen of Colonel Hofer, of the Salem Journal, and is being copied by papers whose editors did not attend the meeting and therefore know noth ing of what was done. Friend Hofer blmself did not show up until just at the closing hour, having been unavoidably detained in Corvallis. Coming into the meeting just before the hour of adjournment, and baring bad do part in the business discussions of the day and a half preceding, it ill j becomes bim to speak slightingly of j the work accomplished by the Associ ation. Over one hundred active news paper publishers attended the Portland meeting, and almost without exception they expressed themselves as feeling J. E. Sibley, H. C. Eakin, W. S. Cary. C)un,y' higher and better basis. It is hardly probable that all these men were wrong, and the eleventh-hour Salem editor right While Prosecutor Heney probably has insufficient evidence in his poses slon to make out a case against C. W. Fulton, be has brought out enough facts in the trial of the Hall case to show the intimate political connection of the Senator with the ring now under indictment for complicity in the land frauds. It is a dirty political mess altogether, and the best thiug for the voters of Oregon to do Is to throw the whole bunch out of office and call for a new deal. Our stutecan never hope to have the standing to which it is entitled until every taint of the laud frauds has been removed from Its officials. WILL HAVE IIE BAND Vern Bartlett Meets Great Success in Organizing Musicians of Dallas. At the moeting held recently for the purpose of organizing a band In Dallas, the Interest shown by the young meo was very encouraging. Mr. Bartlett hud intended to organize a baud of 28 pieces, and the fact that 27 young inon have already signed up for Instruments Is a most hopeful inillcutlon for tho success of the enterprise. The Instruments will be ordered tit once, and practice will bo begun Immediately upon tlioir arrival. Two nights a week will bo given to general practice by tho entire bund, and Mr. Bartlett will devote tho remaining nights to special Instruction for those who are to play tho more dlfllcult Instruments. If the Interest ln tho work is bus tai nod, he expects to have tho band well In hand and ready for the season of carnivals and picnics that will begin In May and extend through tho two suocoedlng months. Oregon. That said improvement will consist in general in the grading and macad amizing of said parts of streets here inbefore described, and will be made at the time and in the manner to be hereafter prescribed by such ordi nance. The cost of said improvement will be assessed to the real property front ing and abutting on said parts of streets. That the City Council of said City will sit in the Council Chamber in said city on the 3d day of February, iWH, at 7:30 o'clock in the evening, and at said time will hear and deter mine objections arid remonstrances theieto, if any there be, and That all owners and other persons In interest muy attend at said time and pluee and show cause, if any they have, why such improvement should not t mude.
