The way to build up Dallas ts to pat ronize Dallas people. POLK'S FRUIT CROP. Amongthe many signs of industrial and agricultural progress in Polk county, one of tho most encouraging Is thn rapid growth of the fruit indus try in the past year. A comparison of the fruit crop of this season with that of 19UB, shows a marked Increaso in acreage, yield and value. Particu larly Is this noticeable in tho prune raising industry. The following fig ures, for which we are indebted to County Fruit Inspector J. 15. Nunn, will perhaps give a clearer insight in to the proportion of this growth during the past year than could bo gained in any other way. The total prune crop in Polk county In 1900 was 1,(150,000 pounds, which sold for an average price of cents a pound, making tho valuo of tho crop for that year $M,750. Tho Polk county crop of 11)07 amounted to 1,075,000 pounds. Tho valuo of this crop at an arorugo price ol' 5 cents, amounts to $83,7fi0. Tho gain in one year's timo is, according to these statistics, as follows: Increaso in crop, (ftft.QOO pounds; Increaso in selling price, 1 J cent a pound; increase in valuo of total crop, $47,000. Tho larger portion of tho prune crop of Polk county is grown and dried in the immediate vicinity of Dallas. It is estimated that tho output of prunes from this locality amounts to fully two-thirds of tho entire crop of the county. Jlutz 00,000 James Hlliott 75,000 Hugh Hayes 05,000 Knns Histrs 50,000 Percy Iilbbnrd 42,000 DOUBT 12 CENT SALES Prominent Hop Buyers Declare 10 Cents Is Top Price on Crops Not Already Contracted. R. E. Williams and E. C. Kirkpat rick, both of whom are recognized as authorities on questions concerning the condition ot the hop market, are exceedingly skeptical as to the reported 12-cent hop sales in the Independence district. Mr. Williams says that the maxium price in the hop market at the present time is 10 cents, and that the reported 12 cent sales were all on Spring contracts. Mr. Kirkpatrick agrees with Mr. Williams. "The market today," he says, "stands at from 9. J to 10 cents for legitimate trading, and anything above that is mere speculation. I talked with many of the prominent hop contractors in Portland yesterday, and this is the common opinion among them." Aside from the reported sales at Independence, there has been nothing in the Polk county hop market this week. EVERYONE HELPS LIBRARY Hundreds of Tickets Are Being Sold For Big Benefit Dinner. Tickets are selling rapidly for the big benefit dinner to be given for the Public Library at Woodman Hall on Thursday evening, October 17. This is going to be a social event of no small importance, for tho representa tive men and women and young people of Dallas will be in attendance. The dinner will prove what good cookery we can produce, and the feast will be enlivened by beautiful music. Eilers Piano Houso is going to send down one of their finest talking ma chines, with their best records.and one of their men having them in charge will give ono of tho best concerts over heard in Dallas from S to 9 p. m. Din ner will be served from 5:30 to 8, thus accomodating everyono's dinner hour. There will be but ono charge, 00 cents, for both entertainments; chil dren, 25 cents for both. The ladies arc counting on at least, 300 people, but the number will probably run over that. No need to dwell on tho worthiness of the cause, for everyone in Dallas knows what tho Public Library means to tho town. What Aib You? Hultwasllled in the United States Circuit Court, Tuesday afternoon, by the Oregon Washington Lumber Manufacturers' Association against the- 1IIII and Harriman lines, asking for an Injunction restraining the rail roads from putting into execution tho advanced tariffs on Kastern lumber shipments from this coast, November 1. Judge Wolvoiton entered an order citing the railroad companies to ap pear in court October 21 and show cause why an injunction should not issue. Iu the death of Anthony Xoltncr, Oregon loses a citizen who was long prominent in political and public life. Perhaps no man in the state had a wider personal acquaintance. He always took an active interest in poli tics, and his memory ..f men. dates and events in the political history of Oregon was little .short of marvelous.
