Mr. Ellis will now turn his attention, to the harvesting of his big prune crop. R. C. Craven arrived home this week from a business visit to Eureka, Cal ifornia. He says Eureka lsone of the prettiest cities he has ever visited. Every street Is paved with asphalt and the city has a bright and pros perous look that cannot fail to impress visitors favorably. Eureka is the center of the redwood iumberindustry and has about 15,000 population. C. B. Thompson, a former owner of the Dallas electric lightplant, has a large store there and is enjoying a prosper ous business. D. I. Caldwell and R. S. Henline, the proprietors of the Dallas Pool and Bil liard Rooms, will install a fine and up-to-date bowling alley in their hall north of Judge L. D. Brown's office. Devotees of this fascinating and healthful amusement will hail with delight this new addition to the amuse ment features of our town. The injury is painful, but Is not serious. Mrs. Bell Morrison, of Olympla, and Mrs. Wells, or Loa Angeles, vis ited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Stoaffer this week. Miss Eula Phillips started for Sea side yesterday to attend the Annual Convention of the Y. W. C. A., which Is to be held at that place this year. Born, Sunday, August 25, to Mr. and Mrs. Pine Burbank, of Luckia mute, a son. Mrs. Burbank was for merly Miss Nellie Phillips, a student of Dallas College. Repairs on the Townsend Creamery have been carried on since Tuesday, and It is found that the damage incl dent to last week's fire, was much less than had at first been estimated The improvements on the Kimball prune drier are rapidly approaching completion and it will easily be ready for operation by the time the prune harvest commences. The various alterations which have been made on It will render it by the most conven lent and up-to-date drier in this vicin ity. SKATING RINK WILL OPEN Good Music and Plenty of Skates Will Be Provided For Satur day Night. Those who bow down at the shrine of the roller skate may not forget the disconsolate and skateless season of the summer, for the Colosseum Rink will open again for its winter season, Saturday evening. Messrs. Kerslake & White have spared no palna to put the floor in first-class condition, and Stockwell's band will furnish the music which adds so much pleasure to the spon, of skating. Mr. Kerslake tried to ' complete arrangements for the installation of an electric organ, but has as yet been unable to secure any definite promise from the Portland firm. However they are unwilling for their patrons to wait longer and will open their rink Immediately. The rink will not be open every evening at present, but later on there will be skating sessions nightly. A new shipment of skates precludes the possibility of the supply running out The Colosseum is the first of the valley rinks to open its doors for the coming season. Pleasant Surprise Party. " About thirty friends and neighbors completely surprised J. L. Wheeler, at his home Saturday evening and reminded him of his 68th birthday, The evening was pleasantly spent with musio and games, after which dainty refreshments were served. Mr. Wheeler was presented with a beauti ful bamboo bookcase by his family and a cup and saucer by D. Ferguson. In a few well-chosen words Mr. Damon, in behalf of the friends and neighbors, presented him with a rock- ng chair. At a late hour the guests departed for their homes, after wish ing Mr. Wheeler many more enjoy able birthdays Falls City News. Steel Bridge Being Painted. The bridge across the Willamette is being treated to a much needed coat of paint and will present a much nicer appearance hereafter. Contractor Bort, with a force of men Is doing the work and says that It was high time that the steel work on the bridge was painted.
