Harold Rich, an employee of the Portland Gas Works, visited his father F. R. Kicht ln Dallas, Wednesday. Miss Edna Scott returned Tuesday from a trip to Seaside and a week's visit with her friend alias Ada Oaficld In Portland. Mrs. J. ! Herschner and children returned to Hood River, Wednesday after a week's visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Loughary. Miss Ruby Reese returned to McMinnville Wednesday, after a two weeks' visit among friends and rela tives in Dallas and Perrydale. Mrs. Vester Swain and daughter, of Burns, are visiting relatives in Dallas. Mrs. Swain is a sister of Mrs. P. J. Coad and Mrs. D. 0. Crider. W. P. Johnson, an engineer for the Burley-Moran Lumber Compauy, of Oregon City, is spending the week at his home in Dallas, and will return to his work Monday. Mrs. V. Zolin, Mrs. Henry Van Mar ter and S. L. Van Marter, all of Lind, Washington, have returned to their home town after an extended visit with 0. E. Cutler and family. - Dr. Lowe, the eye specialist, who is to be in Dallas next Monday and Tues day, has been coming to- Dallas for more than 16 years and has many pleased patrons in Old Polk. The Dallas-Portland passenger train was delayed by a slight freight wreck, Wednesday morning, and was forced to go through Independence on the West Side line, and come into Dallas from the South. Mr. and Mrs. D. I. Caldwell returned Wednesday from a short outing at Bay City. Mr. Caldwell says that this new resort is building up remark ably, and thinks that it will event ually eclipse Newport. J. W. Sweeney and his niece, Miss Dessie Ridgeway, of Dallas, were over Sunday guests at the residence of Jos eph A. Bernard!. Mr. Sweeney and his brother, J. L. Sweeney, are pro prietors of the flouring mills at Dal las. Salem Statesman. All the churches will unite in a union temperance service at the Pres byterian church nextSunday evening. E. F. Zimmerman, Acting Superin tendent of the Anti-Saloon League, will be the speaker. Mr. Zimmerman will preach in the M. E. Church, Sun day morning. M. las G. The young man is a marine engineer, and is employed on a steamship making regular weekly trips between Bandon and San Francisco. Mrs. Fred B. West visited in Dallas this week. While here she rented the Poling property on Church street, and, with her husband, who has been employed in Aberdeen. Wash ington, for about a year, will move back to Dallas this winter. Dr. A. B. Starbuck went to Falls City, Wednesday, to assist in moving Dr. P. F. McMurdo to St Vincent's Hospital in Portland. Dr. McMurdo has been ill for some time, but it is only lately that his condition has been such as to cause uneasiness. A spark from the engine set fire to the strawpile, while Plaster's thresh ing crew was at work on the H. C. Fox place, near Rickreall. They were able to drag their machinery away without serious damage to it, and the only loss was in the destruction of the straw. A new steam feed has been received at the sawmill of the Willamette Val ley Lumber Company, and will be installed at once. Matthews, the obliging land lord of the Hotel Walker In Falls City, was a Dallas visitor, Tuesday. Mrs. A. S. Campbell has been in the Salem hospital for about two weeks, but is now rapidly progressing toward recovery. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. McCargar and little son, and Mrs. Anna Craven, of Portland, Mrs. Charles Carter and daughter, of Oakland, Cal., arrived in Dallas Tuesday evening, in Mr. Mc Cargar's handsome and powerful touring car, enroute to Tillamook. They spent Wednesday visiting in Uallas before proceeding on their ourney. . The Corvallis basketball team was unable to raise sufficient money to defray the expenses of an Eastern tour, and the trip to Jamestown will be abandoned. It is likely that the team will not play together this com ing Winter, as Captain Swann was graduated from the college in June and one or two of the other players have secured employment. The old bridge across the slough north of the LaCreole river, between the Eirkpatrick and Grant hopyards, has been removed and a broad and substantial fill put in. This will add materiully to the appearance and con venience of that part of the county road, and the expense of keeping it in good condition will be very much less than the cost of repairing the bridge. Wagner Brothers have closed all their business affairs in connection with the machine shop formerly con ducted in the Iron Clad Building, and Ray & Stoner will have the entire stock from their feed store moved In by. the end of this week. W. J. Wagner and family will move to a ranch ln Saskatchewan, Canada, as soon as he can secure a car to trans port his household goods. His brother Fred and family will remain in Dallas for the present. A dispatch from Monmouth in yesterday's Oregon Ian says: "The conditions required by the new State Board of normal schools will be met by the Monmouth school and it will continue to run. President Kessler says that the canvas for funds has proceeded far enough to justify him in making this definite announce ment, although only one day's time was given to meet the terms imposed by the board. "Many letters are being received from the alumni of the school sending ln their pledges and assurances of loyal support, and the loyalty of the citizens of Monmouth, which has always been an important factor of the 'Mother Normal,' is again mani fested In the quick response with pledges to complete the cash deposit asked by the board. "By the loyalty and sacrifice of the faculty all departments of the school will be maintained the same as hereto fore and the institution will open promptly at the announced time." Miss Hallie Reynolds returned to Portland yesterday, after a two weeks visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Reynolds. At an adjourned meeting of the Marion countyxcommis8loners' court, held Tuesday, the city of Indepen dence was granted a license to operate a free ferry across the river at that point, Marion county to donate the sum of $25 per month and Folk county a like amount.
