Miss Ruby Reese, of McMinnville, was In Dallas, Friday, on her way to Falls City, where she will visit friends. professor Glass, of the Department of Music in. the State University, was a business visitor In Dallas, Friday. Mrs. E. J. Reynolds and children have gone from Westport, Oregon, to Dundee, Michigan, for an extended visit. E. L. Collins, of Arleta, and his little daughter, Elizabeth, returned to his home Saturday, after a month's visit in Dallas. Mi3S Hallle Reynolds came from Portland, Friday, to spend a few days at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Reynolds. Mrs. Georgia Jennings went to Port land, Friday, and will be employed In the central office of the Bell Telephone Company In that city this winter. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Lynch returned, Friday, from a month's trip on the coast, during which they visited Netarts, Siletz, Beaver, and several other popular resorts. , A fine team of horses belonging to the Spaulding Logging Company was drowned In the Willamette River, near Independence, last Thursday. The team was valued at $500. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Cook, of this city, and Mr. and Mrs Chester Coad, of Dallas, have gone for a two weeks' fishing trip on theTrask. They will also visit their grandfather who has a summer cottage in Tillamook county. McMinnville Telephone-Register. The $2.50 round trip ticket from Portland to Clatsop Beach points, good going Saturday and returning Monday, offers a three days' outing at slight cost. Two-and one-half days on the beach. Tickets via the A. & C. R. at City Ticket office, Portland, corner Third and Morrison Sts., and at Union Depot. James Whitehead was brought before Police Judge L. D. Brown, Fri day, charged with creating a disturb ance at the meeting of the "Tongues of Fire." He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five days' imprisonment, withafineof $2. He has purhased property here and will move up this month. C. L. Starr, secretary of the State Board of Normal Regents, came over from Salem and visited friends in Dallas and Falls City, Sunday. F. M. Splawn returned Saturday from the Alsea country. He has pur chased a farm near Waldport and will soon move there to engage in stock raising. J. M. Sears, J. W. Grant, J. B. Staf ford, John Kelly, P. 8. Fisher and Clarence Fisher, of Dallas, passed through Albany this morning on their way to Gates. Albany Herald. Miss Naana Forbes, a Polk county teacher, formerly from Fort Dodgeja.. a niece of Secretary Forbes of the Salem Y. M. C. A., was among the wave-jumpers at Newport, Sunday. Salem Journal. S. C Dodson has moved into his "hew quarters in the Condon National Bank building, and although he is not wholly settled as yet, he is able to handle the business as heretofore. Mr. Dodson hasordered a large stock of new goods Condon Globe. PolkMcPherson left Tuesday morn ing for Sheridan and towns In Polk county, where he'will remain Indefi nitely. Mr. McPherson has been in very poor health for some time, and expects the change of climate to prove beneficial to him. Condon Globe. Arthur K. Wilson, of Portland, is in Dallas In the interest of a new maga zine. "Western Life," which Is being published In Portland. John Groves, the prominent hop grower of Independence, was in Dal las, Sunday. Mrs. W. W. Gwinn and daughter, of Harrington, Wash., are visiting at the home of Mrs. Mary Savage. Ross Ballantyne has returned from his work in Dayton, and will remain in Dallas this winter. The Spaulding Logging Company has leased Its sawmill at Indepen dence to D. A. Hodge, of that city. D. A. Madison and wife, of Dallas, were registered at the Hotel Corvallis, Wednesday. Benton County Repub lican. Miss Cecille Rowland left Tuesday for a month's visit with relatives at Dallas, Salem and Portland Benton County Republican. Alva Morton, a mail clerk on the Southern Pacific, took the Dallas Portland run yesterday, and made a short visit with his relatives In Dallas. H. L. Fenton, I. F. Yoakum and F. J. Coad returned from Newport with their families, yesterday, having spent a most pleasant week at that popular resort Mrs. J. Hill Cook, of Portland, with her mother and brother, passed through Dallas in her large touring car, Monday. While here they were theguestsof Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Haw kiBS. Hod. Walter L. Tooze, the enterpris ing Falls City merchant, was a Dallas visitor, yesterday. Mr. Tooze now employs fifteen clerks in bis big department store, and Is constantly increasing his stock. Fire destroyed the dwelling house of the Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Phelps, at Mapleton, Lane county, one day last week. Building and contents were a total loss. Mr. Phelps is the pastor of the Evangelical church at Mapleton. The deadlock In the Independence city council has been broken by the election of W. A. Messner, a promi nent merchant, to fill the vacancy. A. B. Robinson, a young man employed in one of the drug stores has been elected recorder. J. R." Col lins was elected marshal to succeed T. C. Elliott. Mayor Paddock's resig nation has been accepted. The morning train from Portland pulled Into Dallas, Thursday, with one of the equalizers on the front truck of the mail coach, broken entirely In two. Some doubts were expressed as to whether the necessary repairs could be made in Dallas, and Conductor Crocker feared that the accident would throw the train behind time. How ever, they hooked onto the car and ran it down to the machine shops or tne Dallas-Falls City Railroad to see what could be done. Here the machinists jacked the car up, took out the broken equalizer, which Is a wrougni iron par about four Inches square, weiaea me break, and had the car In running order in a little more than an hour. Earl Day, Glen DeHaven, Fonso Manston and Christy Stafrin went to Teal's Creek, Sunday, where they spent a pleasant day.
