The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronise Dallas people. Oregon has a few hot days to sum mer, but the heat is not of the kind that kills. Although the thermometer climbed up to the 100-niark in many places in the state Tuesday afternoon no prostrations were reported, and laboring men pursued their usual tasks without suffering serious inconveDi?nce. The warmest days in Oregon are always followed by deliciously cool nights, and the work ing man arises from his bed in the morning rested and refreshed for another day's toil. Oregon's climate Is all right, even if we are inclined to grumble at it a little occasionally. Every newspaper publisher in Ore gon should plan to attend the annual session of the Oregon Press Associ ation, to be held at Seaside the last week in August A program or un usual interest will be prepared, and the discussion of topics of interest to the trade will prove helpful to every publisher and printer. Two days will be devoted to business and two to sight seeing. A trip to Fort Stevens, a ride over the Columbia bar, and a day at the Astoria regatta are among the attractions in store for the visiting editors. President Ireland and the members of the Executive Committee are working hard to make the meeting successful, and they should be given the hearty encouragement of every newspaper publisher in the state. The publishers of Oregon owe it to them selves, and to each other, to build up and strengthen the State Press Associ ation, and the way to build up the Association is to attend its meetings. Don't stay at home and growl that the organization has never accomplished anything. Such fault-flnding only weakens the Association and injures the printing business, If you have any kick to make, make it from the inside, not from the outside. That's the way to bring about the result desired by every publisher and printer in Oregon, namely, profitable business and more of it. August Kisser will succeed I. N. Woods as bookkeeper in the Dallas National Bank. August Is a worthy young man, and his many friends will be glad to hoar of hla proniotion. Joseph Brown, of Lewisvllle, pur chased Mrs. Lydia D'Lashmutt's property this week and will move his family to town. Mrs. D'Lashmutt will probably build herself a neat cottage. During the month of July, 1048 calls were made at the Dallas Free Library, and 457 books were loaned, of which 3G0 were fiction, 18 non- fiction, and 79 juvenile. Splawn, Dallas. tf 120 For Sale. acres of improved farm land, The action of the Woodmen Head Camp convention in raising the insurance rates of the old members to correspond with the rates paid by new members is "meet with equity and good conscience," as the lawyers would put it The mere fact that a mistake was made and the rates placed too low in the first place was not a sufficient excuse for continuing the low rates to the old members and taxing the new members to make up the deficiency. The old members have been insured all these years at less than cost, so they are really ahead of the game, even though hereafter called upon to pay on the same basis as the younger members. To illustrate: Suppose that Neighbor Smith joined the order ten years ago, when the rate for men of his age, 30 years, was say 45 cents for $1000. Suppose that two years later the rate for men of 30 years was raised to 90 cents per $1000. There would seem no good reason whySmith should still be carried for 45 cents while Jones, who joined later, is being charged 90 cents for the same insurance. The injustice of this plan was apparently recognized by the delegates to the Head Camp when they voted to place all members on an equal basis. The order of Woodcraft has made a phenomenal growth in the last ten years, notwithstanding this disparity in rates, for the reason that it has insured its members at rates far below those charged by the old-line companies and has promptly paid its losses. Its officers, guided by the mistakes of other less prudently managed orders, are placing Wood craft on a solid and lasting founda tion. It is only reasonable to conclude that, as the past growth of the order has been steady and healthy, the Increase of membership in future will surpass the most sanguine expecta tions, now that all members are to receive their insurance on a just and equitable basis. three miles east of Dallas.
