SHALL UK FERTILIZE?
A reader of this department residing
in Los Angeles and owning a large
farm In Illinois writes making Inquiry
as to the value of phosphates as a fer
tilizer for bis own and other Illinois
corn farms, citing reports of the Illi
nois experiment station farms lu way
of Introducing his query. There Is lit
tle reason to suspect that the reports
of tbe state experiment station are
biased or colored because of financial
Interest which the directors of the
work might have In concerns offering
such phosphates for sale, and we be
lieve that their findings can be taken
at face value. While there would
seem to be slight call for commercial
fertilizer on any farm which has been
projterly and wisely managed and In
which the products of the soil have
been sold In the finished form of beef,
pork, mutton and butter instead of In
the raw grain form, In the latter case
the application of a certain amount of
commercial fertilizer of the kind men
tioned would seem to be advisable and
calculated to return to the soil ele
ments of which It has been robbed
through years of uninterrupted and
none too -careful cropping. If one has
serious doubts as to the efficacy of
such treatment It would seem to be
wise to make a careful test of such
artificial fertilizers on a small scale
a few acres. Much would depend on
the character of the soil and even
more upon the kind of treatment which
It had received, and such an expert
ment carefully conducted, with results
noted, would seem to demonstrate be
yond question whether the application
of such fertilizer on the whole farm
would be practical and Justifiable.
There Is so much opportunity for the
adulteration of commercial fertilizers
that we question the wisdom of using
the output of any company unless It Is
recommended by one's own state ex
periment station. As showing the ben
efit of artificial fertilizers we note an
experiment conducted through a period
of seven years by the Ohio experiment
station, which showed that a plot of
land fertilized with stale or bleached
manure produced an average yield per
acre of 51 bushels of corn, 15.00 bush
els of wheat and 1,950 pounds of hay.
An adjoining plot fertilized with stale
manure, re-enforced by a phosphate,
yielded an average of 01.23 bushels of
corn, 24.28 bushels of wheat and 3,835
pounds of hay.

Breeding Them.
The action of a draft horse is a point
which is receiving more attention than
It formerly did. A horse to command
the very highest price must move well.
He must be good at the walk and also
do the trotting act fairly well. Length
of stride and stralghtness of stride are
the two most Important points to be
considered at the walk. Sintppiness
Is also essential. Height of action and
flashlness are attractive, but not nec
essarily utility points. Winging, pad
dllng or rolling action in front and
wabbling hocks are all features which
every good horseman condemns, thus
are discriminated against at nil of the
leading horse markets.
In breeding draft horses too much
attention cannot be given to the ques
tion of weight. At ail of the loading
draft horse' markets horseflesh sells at
the rate of 25 cents per pound for each
additional pound from 1,000 to 1.800.
for 50 cents per pound from 1,800 to
2,000 pounds, for $1 a pound from
2,000" to 2,200 pounds and from $2 to
$2.50 per pound from 2,200 pounds up
wards, provided, of course, that the
horse is sound, well made and desira
ble In every other respect. Tims the
heavy ones are the kind we should all
aim to produce, because at best we
will get plenty of the lighter weights
to meet the demands for the same.
While a good horse can never be of
a bad color, still some colors, such as
the nicely dappled gray or blue roan,
are more In demand than others, thus

Food For Ducklings.
The proper food for young ducklings
depends upon their age. When from
one to five days old they need boiled
egg and breadcrumbs finely chopped.
After that age meal, preference given
to oatmeal, and middlings in like pro
portion until they are three to four
weeks old. Then grain in their water.
The Scratching Shed.
A scratching shed should be built
tight so that the fowls are sheltered
from the wind. The south side should
be open or, on very cold days, covered
with light muslin or other thin cloth.

THE SAX JOSE SCALE.
The San Jose scale, whose ravages
have meant a loss of millions of dol
lars to the fruit growers of the coun
try, was first Introduced lu this coun
try In the early seventies on the
grounds of James Lick of San Jose,
Cal., and from that time on there has
been a good deal of question as to
what country was the original home of
the pest. Explorations and Investiga
tions 'lately conducted by representa
tives of the agricultural department at
Washington prove quite conclusively
that the scale Insect Is a native of cer
tain districts In China, where Its
ravages seem to have been compara
tively insignificant, conditions not hav
ing been favorable to Its propaga
tion. Transferred to this country, how
ever, It spread with amazing rapidity,
attacking not only fruit, but other de
ciduous trees as well. Several varie
ties of Insects have been found which
seem to be natural enemies of the
scale Insect, but the largest measure
of.rellef has come from thorough spray
ing with the well known sulphur
wash, which has not only protected or
chards against this, but other fungous
enemies.

TOO MICH WORK.
"Too much work" is the verdict that
may be produced In the case of alto
gether too many middle aged and eld
erly men and women. With some of
this large class It has been a case of
necessity, a condition which they have
not entered or remained in voluntarily.
With others the condition of being for
ever and always head over heels In

A S1BO EAR OF CORN.
At the close of the short course in
corn and stock Judging which was held
at the Iowa experiment station at
Ames the first two weeks In January
all of the prize corn which was on ex
hibit was auctioned ofT to the highest
bidders. The prize sweepstakes ear,
which was of the Reld's yellow dent
variety, was about fourteen Inches long
and weighed twenty ounces, being pro
nounced by Professor Holden, the corn
expert, as the finest ear of corn he had
ever seen. When this wss put up at
auction It ran up to $150, at which
price It was bid In by the man who
raised It. A bushel of corn at this
rate would be worth about $8,500,
while a single kernel of the ear in
question Is worth about 13 cents. The
Interest which has been aroused among
the corn growers of the state in the
matter of raising the largest possible
number of bushels of thoroughbred
corn to the acre Is very keen, and the
present year promlsesSo be productive
of even more striking results than the
last has been.
