MUNICIPAL OWNERSHIP.
Let's see, wasn't it down in New
berg that water was so cheap and
nlentiful that the city was almost
willing to put it in the houses for
nothing and pay the property-owners
for BDrinkliner their lawns with it?
Seems to us like we heard something
of that sort from local advocates
of municipal ownership a year or two
ago. Here is what the Aewberg
Graphio says about it :
"As will be seen by the report of the
last meeting of the council, a large
number of water consumers have
been ordered to put in meters. Had
this economical streak struck the
council before the expenses of the new
water system had been incurred, there
might have been some show of reason
in it, but since it is supposed at least
that the supply will be abundant as
soon as the system is completed, which
will be within a few days, this action
looks rather arbitrary. The intention
no doubt is to get more revenue from
the consumers. Whether they will
succeed or not remains to be seen. As
for the Graphic, if the expenses of a
meter must be added, with the un
certainty of the monthly rate to be
considered, other power will be
resorted to, and others will take the
same view of the matter."

The Albany Morning Herald has
been enlarged to a seven-column folio
and presents a neat and prosperous
appearance.
The Albany Herald says wool grown
in Linn, Marion and Lane counties is
of better quality than that raised in
Polk and the counties on the north
and west. All of which would be
interesting, if true.
B. I. Ferguson, a progressive fruit
grower of Eola, Polk county, marketed
27,500 pounds of Royal Anne cherries
from an orchard of only H acres. The
fruit brought him the handsome sum
of $1350. That's the kind of farming
that pays.
The fruitgrowers of Benton county
met in Corvallis this week and per
fected an organization for the ad
vancement of their mutual interests,
the improvement of the grade of Ben
ton's fruit output, and the enforcement
of the existing fruit laws.
A large extra edition of Friday's
Observer, containing a complete story
of the big Fourth of July celebration,
was quickly exhausted. Large num
bers of the papers were bought by
residents of Dallas, to be mailed to
friends aud relatives in the East and
to spread the fame of "The Town That
Does Things."
Tho editor of Physical Culture
recently argued that Japan would
whip the United States in case war
should arise, because her people are
vegetarians and the Americans aj-e
not Since the showing that has been
made at Fort Stevens, we are inclined
to think that there is still some show
for us, should war be declared, even
though our men do occasionally

Noticeable among the occurrences
of the past month have been the the
arrivals ot numerous capitalists from
Texas and other states in the South
and Middle West, either seeking busi
ness locations or looking after real es
tate investments already made. To
the close observer and careful thinker,
the fact that Dallas is becoming the
headquarters of this Ingress of new
people is significant.
The election of C. L. Starr to the
responsible office of Secretary by the
new State Board of Normal Regents is
a merited recognition of past efficiency
and faithfulness to duty. Mr. Starr
stands In the very front rank of Ore
gon's able educators, and is in every
way qualified to fill the office to which
he has been elected. Young, active,
capable, a man of untiring energy
and unsurpassed ability as an organ-
