Polk County Observer J. C. HAYTER, KDITOR AND PUBLISHICR Published Weekly and Semi -Weekly $1.60 per Year. Strictly in Advance. DALLAS, OREGON, July 5, 1907. The way to build up Dallas ts to pat ronize Dallas people. Wherever there is a sale of blooded livestock going on, be It In Oregon Chicago, Kansas City, or Canada there you will find some Polk county farmer bidding in the choicest animals. Price cuts little figure with these men in securing the stock they are after. It is safe to assert that there are more prize-winning animals from the big Eastern livestock shows owned in Polk county than in any other county in the United States, This enterprising and progressive spirit among the farmers is adver tising Old Polk far and wide as the home of blooded horses, cattle, sheep, goats and hogs, and is responsible in a very large measure for the rapidly increasing prosperity of the county, The farmers are just now devoting their attention largely to dairy stock. A recent number of the Salem States man says: "At an auction sale of Jersey cows held at Turner last week, one farmer from Polk county took four young cows at $206. The demand for dairy cows was never bet ter." POLK COUNTY PIONEERS Ninety Names Recorded at teenth Annual Reunion. He made many friends during his stay in Dal las. The celebration was the occasion of a glad home-coming and many for mer residents of Dallas came back to spend the day with relatives and friends, thereby adding to the general enjoyment of the holiday. Some of the younger .generation were highly amused and greatly edified Wednesday morning, by a con versation carried on In Chinook jargon between several of the old pioneers and an aged Grande Ronde Indian. The old Indian knew all the early pio neers and recalled the ancient enuity between Eph Shelton and Sibley Ann concerning the latter's grizzly bear story. For about a half hour the youth of Dallas stood around the corner where the old Chief was hold ing forth, with mouths open and eyes bulging, listen! ng eagerly to the fl uent stream of Chinook which has, in these days, become almost a dead language in Oregon.
