Oregon. Judge Henry L. Benson, of Klam ath Falls, will deliver the oration in Dallas on July 4. Senator U. S. Loughary and Oscar Hayter, the com mittee appointed to secure a speaker for the big celebration, extended the invitation to Judge Benson, Saturday, and were erreatlv pleased when he consented to come. Judge Benson is one of the most eloquent and entertaining speakers In the state, and his Fourth of July address will be one of the prominent features of the day in Dallas. It added, at the late commencement, seven to the long list of the graduates it has sent out" The Dallas public school made an excellent showing in the county eighth grade examinations. Out of nineteen applicants examined, thirteen made their grades. Two of the failures made 69 per cent out of a required 70 per cent in arithmetic, notwith standing the fact that seven out often problems were taken from the Higher Arithmetic, which is not taught in the eighth grade. The people of Dallas have good reasons for being proud of their publie school. TOWN THAT DOES THINGS. me enterprising citizens or our neighbor town, Dallas, have sub scribed a fund of $1000 to be used in the celebration of the Nation's birth day. Dallas is truly a town that does things, and the secret of its success is that the business men pull together. Falls City News. New- berg Graphic. Mrs. Fred Rich came up from Dal las Wednesday evening to visit her mother, Mrs. Cynthia Gray. She and her mother will go to Coburg this eve ning for a few days visit. Browns ville Times. M. M. Dungan and wife, of Dallas, are visiting their many Jefferson friends. Mel was compelted on ac count of sickness to take a few weeks rest. He says business is good at Dallas. Jefferson Review. Rev. S. J. Lindsay attended the annual commencement exercises of Dallas College on Tuesday and Wed nesday. He reports a large attend ance and very interesting exercises. Hillsboro Independent. "Walter L. Tooze, the Merchant Prince, proprietor of the largest de partment store in the valley," is the way an advertisement in a Dallas paper reads. Mr. Tooze recently bought a big store in Falls City and is hustling for trade. Albany Herald. A. V. R. Snyder, who .was recently removed from the office of U. S. Com missioner, by Judge Gunnison, at the request of the governor, without any warrant of law or justice, and whom the business men of the town asked to have re-instated, is waiting to hear from the Judge, who wired from Fair banks that he would let him know last week. Snyder does not care for the office, particularly, but thinks he is entitled to the same amount of con sideration that should be accorded a Digger Injun. Wrangell, Alaska, Sentinel. Owing to the lateness of the season, the Colosseum skating rink will be opened only one night each week here after. The skating sessions will be held on Saturday night, from 8 to II o'clock. JAMES ELLIOTT, Rural Carriers' Meeting. Bert Wells, rural mail carrier on Route 1, informs us that the Rural Carriers' Convention in Portland last week was a highly successful meeting. Addresses were made by Senator Ful ton, Congressman Hawley, Mayor Lane and other men of state promi nence. Among the betterments and improvements advocated by the carriers were: The adoption of motor-cycles for summer use; the wearing of uniforms by the carriers; the adoption of the parcels post system. provided a reasonable weight limit is established and the pay of the carriers increased to corre spond with the increased work of car rying the mails.
