The Dallas-Salem stage now arrives in Dallas daily at 3 p. m., connecting with the 3:20 passenger train for Falls City; also connects with the northbound train at Derry. tf About thirty people from Dallas went to Falls City, Sunday, and spent the day in sight-seeing. Stockwell's band accompanied the excursionists and furnished excellent music. The Sunday trains will be run until further notice. W. D. Sappington, Sheriff of Clarke County, Washington, was a business visitor in Dallas, Saturday. He was the guest of Sheriff J. M. Grant while here. This was Sheriff Sappington 's first visit to Dallas In twenty-three years, and it is hardly necessary to add that he found few old landmarks. He says Dallas is one of the liveliest business towns of its size in the Northwest. John Eakin left for his home in Cairo, Illinois, yesterday morning, after a two months' visit at the home of his brother, H. C. Eakin. When he came to Dallas he expected to spend a year's vacation in Oregon for the benefit of his health, but important business matters called him home and it was with great regret that he found it necessary to cut his stay short. Mr. Eakin has made three trips to Oregon in the last fifteen years, and has never failed to fl nd health and strength In the cool, bracing air of the Wil lamette Valley. He returns home this time much stronger than when he came, and the only regret he ex pressed when leaving was that he was not able to remain longer. DALLAS, OREGON Dallas' Live Business Men Liberally to Fourth of July Fund Give The committee appointed to solicit funds for the annual Pioneer Reunion and the big Fourth of July celebra tion, to be held in Dallas, July 3 and i, is meeting with excellent success. About one-half of the business dis trict has been canvassed and nearly t-509 has been subscribed. It eot looks as if the Observer was close to the mark when it predicted that the total fund would reach $1,000. With this amount of money in hand, Dallas will be able to give the people of Polk county the greatest two days' celebration they have ever enjoyed. As soon as the work of the finance committee is completed, the various committees will bo called together and plans for the big event will be outlined. Many patriotic citizens have ex pressed a desire to contribute to the Fourth of July fund, and as it will be impossible for the committee to call on everybody, the Observer will gladly receive and receipt for all donations of $2.60 or less. Who will be the first to contribute one dollar to a fund of $50 to be turned over to the committee for celebration purposes? h A lt . ( h m II . m ,v Fancy bleating. The members of the First Christian Church of Dallas are planning to erect a tabernacle on their lot adjoin ing the church to accommodate the people who will want to hear Dr. Martin, of Seattle, one of the most successful evangelists of modern times. VanOrsdel and son, Robbie, and daughter, Ruth, will leave tomorrow for an extended visit in the Eastern states. Dallas will be well represented at the Artisans' picnic at Rlckreall next Saturday. An enjoyable day's outing is anticipated by all. The Rev. A. C. Corbln, pastor of the Christian church, exchanged pulpits with the Rev. C. F. Swander, of Mc- Minnville, Sunday. Mr. Swander Dreached two 'excellent sermons to large and appreciative congregations, The new officers of the Rebekah Assembly of Oregon are: Mrs. Emma Galloway, of McMlnnvllle, president; Mrs. Mary Smith, of Grants Pass, vice president; Mrs. Carrie Hubbard, of Independence, warden; Mrs. Ora Cosper, of Dallas, secretary ; Miss JEda Jacobs, ofCorvallis, treasurer. Mrs, Cosper says the order is in the most prosperous condition In Its history, the membership having passed the 10.000 mark. Over 900 new members were taken in last year. For carelessly throwing a heavy bundle of papers out of his car and knocking Glenn Holman to the ground, F. H. Whitney, express messenger on the Portland passenger train was arrested Saturday evening and taken before Police Judge Brown, who fined him $5 for assault and battery. While theoffeuse was doubt less unintentional, the arrest and fine will serve as a warning to the messengers to be more careful in throwing heavy packages of papers into a crowd and endangering life and limb.
