Townsend Creamery Company, of Portland, and A. A. Underbill, manager of the com pany's branch creamery In Salem were In Dallas Wednesday afternoon with a view of orjenine a creamery in this citv. Thev spent the afternoon looking over the town and interview ing the business men and farmers, and also secured a location that would be suitable to their business in the event they should decide to open a creamery here. The two gentlemen had not beard of the movement among the farmers for a co-operative creamery, and as scon aa they found that such an enter prise was being considered, they hastened to assure the business men that thev would in no way interfere with the plans of the farmers in establishing such an Industry. How ever, should the farmers decide not to establish a creamery, they will then be glad to take the matter up and sub mit a proposition that they feel sure will be acceptable to all concerned They will take no farther steps toward establishing a creamery here until the farmers have held their meeting next Saturday afternoon. The Townsend Creamery Company is one of the largest concerns of its kinds in the Northwest The com pany operates creameries in Portland, Salem and Lyons; has cream stations in nearly every county in the valley, and also owns a large cheese factory in the Nehalem country. Five thou sand pounds of butter are manufac tured daily, and during the summer months several tons of ice cream are turned out each week. A ready mar ket is found for the product of the various factories, at the highest mar ket prices. Mr. Townsend was very favorably impressed with Dallas as a location for a creamery, and believes that a large business could be built up here, if properly managed and closely attended to. It is reported that a movement is on foot in Portland to refer the Oregon Tax Commission's bUl on assessment and taxation to the people by the ini tiative. The bill was prepared ai great expense by the commission, but was defeated in the Legislature. The bill contemplates the creation of a State Board of Tax Commissioners to handle all franchise and railroad assessments. BUSINESS LOCALS. Dr. Hayter. .Dentist. Office over Wilson's Drug Store.
