Dr. Mark Hayter will attend the annual meeting of the State Dental Society in Portland. His office will be closed on Friday and Saturday of this week. Newport is to have a skating rink with a floor space C0X126 and a circu lar wall around the skating area. The rink will be well lighted with electric lights and have modern conveniences. The Frank Lucas farm of 1G0 acres, two miles north of Monmouth, was sold Friday to F. Y. Mulkey for $8000 and is being divided into smaller tracts for fruit orchards and diversi fied farming. Work on the excavation for the basement of Oscar Hayter's new resi dence in south Dallas was commenced this morning. The plans for the build ing are still in the hands of Architect F. H. Morrison, but will be completed in a few days. Mrs. Emma Belt left Sundav after noon for Portland, where she will ttfke charge of the Angelus rooming house on Sixth and Jeffeison streets. Mrs. Belt has lived in Dallas since ber early childhood and has many friends who regret her departure. Miss Hammond, of the Chicago School of Oratory, will read before the convention. Card is dangerously ill at his home at Oakdale and little hope is entertained of his recovery. Miss Ollie Coulter, of Sheridan Junction, visited at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. George Scott, Sunday. Mrs. Arthur Simpson and children are visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Pillar. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Johnson went to Erownsville, Saturday, to attend a family reunion and visit friends for a few days. W. V. Fuller has purchased a lot from T. J. Hayter in South Dallas and will put up a neat dwelling house this summer. R. E. Williams, H. Hirschberg and Dr. 0. D. Butler will leave for Los Angeles, Thursday, to attend the big meeting of the Mystic Shriners. Mrs. EdTedrow is seriously ill at her home Iu this city. The family recently moved to Dallas from the Luckiamute country and are living in the Poling residence. The churches of Dallas will unite in a union temperance service in the Uuited Evangelical church on Sun day evening, May 5. The address will be delivered by Rev. A. C. Corbin, of the Christian church. There will be special music. It is desired that all lovers of temperance attend this service. The girls of the Young Women's Christian Association of the College will give a May-day festival on the lawn, May 1, from 5 to 7:30 p. in. A program appropriate for the season will be rendered and a supper served. Watch for the poster in Stafrin's window for the menu. Everybody Invited. Rev. D. Julian Becker will leave today for a visit to San Francisco and Oakland. E. L. Jones, of Albany, winner of the oratorical contest in Dallas last Friday night, will occupy the pulpit in the Presbyterian church next Sunday morning. Rev. Becker will return home a week from next Saturday. A. D. Pettyjohn has just finished his ferry boat at Hall's ferry, and as soon as the road in Polk county is sufficiently repaired to admit of travel, the ferry boat will begin operations. There are two bridges somewhat out of repair and a few other minor troubles which will probably be adjusted within a week. Statesman. While helping to unload the circus outfit from the cars Sunday afternoon, one of the workmen was struck' by a wagon tongue and thrown violently to the ground. It was at first feared that he had been seriously injured, but examination proved that he had suf fered nothing worse than a few severe bruises, and he was soon able to resume work. Brannon on Dallas Road Consumed by Flames. j The home of Mrs. D. K. Brannon, ' located on the Dallas road at a j distance of about three-quarters of a ; mile from the steel bridge, was de stroyed by fire Sunday afternoon at about 2 o'clock. On account of the rapid progress of the fire, the neigh bors wno rescued a part of the house hold goods were unable to reach the second story and most of the furniture in that part of the house was consumed by the raging flames. Most of the furniture on the first floor, consisting of a piano and other articles of furniture were saved. The loss is estimated between $2000 and $3000 and was covered by $1000 Insurance in the Fire Relief Associa tion of McMinnville. The neighbors were very helpful to Mrs. Brannan, who is thankful for the efforts made by them during the fire. The fire is said to have caught from a defective flue on the second floor. Salem Statesman. MASK SKATING CARNIVAL Maskers Will Have Merry Time at Colosseum Rink, Thursday Evening, May 9. The skaters of Dallas are looking forward with pleasant anticipation to the mask carnival to be held in the Colosseum rink on the evening of Thursday, May 9. Messrs. Kerslake & White are making active prepar ations for the big event and will leave nothing undone that will add tothj pleasure of the occasion. Stockwell's band will furnish special music for the carnival, and many novel features will be Introduced to entertain the skaters and spectators. A large number of maskers are expected from Salem. Miles Davis' grocery store in Fir Park addition was opened for business this morning. R. M. Wonderly, a prominent con tractor and builder of Falls City, was a business visitor in Dallas yesterday. The large crowd iu Dallas yesterday was well handled. No accidents occurred, and, no cases of pocket picking or burglary have been re ported. Surveyors are running the levels this afternoon for a concrete walk in front of the Smith & Coad block, and also in front of the Simonton & Scott grocery store. The public school and college students were granted a holiday Mon day to give them an opportunity to enjoy the circus. A proper and com mendable move on the part of the directors and teachers, who haven't forgotten that they were once young themselves. Dow Coulter's big street sprinkler was hauled out of the barn Monday morning and is now being used to keep down the dust on Dallas' prin cipal thoroughfares. Cool, clean streets are an appreciated luxury since the disagreeable dust storms of last week. James Robertson Is driv ing the sprinkler for Mr. Coulter. Seth Riggs. ex-County Commis sioner of Polk county, was given a hearing in Justice Holman's court on complaint of Fruit Inspector Nunn that Mr. 'Riggs had failed and neglected to spray his orchard on the old home farm north of Rlckreali. Mr. Riggs contested the case, claim ing that be had made all reasonable efforts to secure a man to spray the trees and that he had no intention of seeking to evade the law. Mr. Riggs views the matter good-naturedly, but doesn't desire to pay a fine if he can avoid it. Later : After bearing the testimony, justice Holman fined Mr. Riggs $25 and costs. The Norris & Rowe combined circus and dog and pony show gave two exhibitions in Dallas yesterday. The attendance was large at each perform ance, the crowd in the afternoon being estimated at fully 4000 people. Many visitors came in from the Luckiamute country by special motor, the Fails City trains were heavily laden with people, and a large number of farmers drove in with their families and eujoyed the big show. The weather was perfect, the sun shining brightly all day, with just enough sea breeze to make the air refreshing. The circus tents were pitched in the Kirkpatrick field north of town. The spread of canvas covered nearly four acres of ground. The performance was given in two rings and on an elevated stage. The numerous acts, while not given on as large a scale as those of the big three ring shows, were pleasing to the audience. The bareback riding was up to the usual average, and some of the high trapeze work was skillfully performed. The best features of the program were the acts of two tight wire artists and three men on the horizontal bars. The clowns were few In number and provoked little merri ment; in fact, they hardly worked fast enough to keep warm. The hippo drome races were fast and exciting. Norris & Rowe have the nucleus for a good menagerie, the few animals they have being fine specimens of their respective kinds. The circus also carries the usual sideshow features. Taken as a whole, the Norris & Rowe show furnishes a satisfactory enter tainment When the fact is taken into consideration that this circus was almost destroyed by the California earthquake, the enterprising young proprietors are entitled to much credit for getting their property in as good shape as it is so soon after the wreck. Manager Norris says the receipts of yesterday's performances were highly satisfactory, even greater than the management had expected. He expects to visit Dallas regularly hereafter when exhibiting In the Ore gon country. . May Get a Flouring Mill. G. M. Gooch, of Dallas, was in Leb anon yesterday looking over the place with a view to establishing a flouring mill in this city. He thinks that a mill could do a good business here, but found one serious drawback, which is lack of water power. However, if our citizens will give him sufficient encouragement and assistance, he may deoide to put up a mill and use steam power. He will probably sub mit a proposition to our citizens in a few days. He conducted a mill at Dallas for u number of years, but has recently sold out. Another gentleman of Dallas will be associated with him if he decides to go into business again. We believe that Mr. Gooch Is all right as a miller and a citizen, and we hope he will decide to put up a mill here. Lebanon Advance.
