J t -.-Va A NEEDED INDUSTRY. Evenr train running out of Dallas carries milk and cream for creameries at distant points. This is a condition of affairs for which there is not the slightest excuse. Dallas is one of the most favorably located towns in Ore gon for a first-class creamery, and every drop of milk produced in the surrounding country should be man ufactured into butter right here at home. The creamery business is a profitable industry profitable both to the farmer and the manufacturer and a first-class plant, managed In a skillful and business-like way, would add greatly to the piosperity of Dallas and the tributary country. For the past few years, the people of Dallas have devoted all their energy to the development of the lumber in dustry, and the splendid results attained speak more eloquently than words for their ability and enterprise along this line. By taking up one thing at a time, they have accom plished desired results, aud they are now reaping the reward of their labors. Having accomplished the greater undertakings, they should now turn their attention to the lesser industries. The timber will not last always. When the forests shall have been cut away, it will be necessary to 1 depend upon other resources for sup port. The dairying and stock-raising Industry will then take the lead in Western Polk county and all the vast region lying between Dallas and the Pacific ocean. If Dallas is to main tain her commercial supremacy then, the time to strike is now. The Observer believes that the business men of Dallas and the farm ers of the surrounding country should get together and establish a co-operative creamery or cheese factory, or both, in this city. The amount of capital necessary to start a first-class creamery would not be large and the stock for such a concern would be readily subscribed. As to the success of such an enterprise, there can be no question. If we can ship our cream Ht a profit for others to handle, we can make more profit by handling it our selves. The high price paid for the Polk county mohair is one of the direct results of the annual goat show held at Dallas. These shows have encour aged the farmers to get rid of their inferior animals and to breed their flocks up to a high standard of excel lence. The mohair in the Polk county pool more nearly meets the require ments of the manufacturers than any produced elsewhere in the state, hence the high price the buyers are willing to pay to secu re it. The goat breeders who are working earnestly and in telligently to produce the best possible grade of hair are adding materially to the wealth and prosperity of Polk county. The publishers of the Eugene Guard are putting out one of the brightest and newsiest daily papers In Oregon. The office is equipped with a linotype ana a two-revolution uranston news press, and the mechanical work-on tho paper is strictly first-class. The Guard Is a live paper in a live town To Salem by Automobile. Bert Dennis has purchasod.a fine new automobile and will establish a twlce-a-day passenger schedule between Dallas and Salem. The machine is a 10-horse-power Reo, of the very latest make, and will carry three persons besides the chauffeur. The run from Dallas to Salem can easily be made in an hour, but when carrying passengers Mr. Dennis will make the trip in about an hour and SO minutes for the sake of safety. The time schedule will be announced in a few days.. If sufficient encouragement is given the enterprise, Mr. Dennis will put on a large touring car later in the season.
